Pirogovo is an architectural/ history museum, featuring authentic buildings from villages from different regions of Ukraine on a spacious, scenic territory. Windmills, churches, houses, barns, schoolhouses, village pubs. Inside each house is authentic furniture, and there is usually a curator in folk costume close by who is more than willing to give a short lecture. Most weekends , especially in the summer and fall there are folk music programs on an outside stage. There is also horsebackriding, and sometimes horsebackriding shows. Wonderful souvenir shops on the premises- the only drawback is that there isn't always much food to be had, so pack a picnic, just in case
A little distance from Kyiv. Best visited in early Autumn and on special festivals. Good depiction of traditional Ukrainian life.
It's about a 40 minutes drive from the center and worth planning for a 2 hour stroll watching the different styles of houses from all over Ukraine. Should you decide to go for shashlik and some moonshine or beer, then plan for 4 hours. It's cheap and cheerful. Ideally go in April - June and September to October since it can get rather hot in summer.
Can be a little hard to find but I visited in 1989 and 2014 and both times found this thoroughly enjoyable. It's still just far enough out of the city to kid yourself you are in the countryside and on my second visit on a weekend in Feb 2014 there was a great atmosphere with families enjoying the food stalls and rides in pony traps. Definitely worth a visit on a weekend.
This is an intersting Open Air Museum which depicts how people lived in Ukraine 250 to 500 years ago. Most of the buildings are made of wood with thatched roofs. I read some of the other reviews and agree that it is easier to see by car, but I am in my 60's, have been there a couple of times and I have walked the entire facility each visit. Admission and food are a bit pricey, but it is a museum....not a welfare facility! Get there early and try to choose a sunny summer day. Best to visit from late spring to early fall.
This was the waste of time is a little out of the way I went in late summer and it was a little on the cold side and windy most of the items from food too drink were expensive from the history side it was good you find out what and the way those from the Ukraine lived around 500 years ago.Good walking shoes a must forget high heel shoes for your lady or she will have sore feet would be better on a nice day but it is open to the elements .
Ok, I am not a big hiker, but even if I would be it is better to visit this place by car. You have to pay some extra for entering by car though. The open air museum is huge and if you are not a determined hiker or if it is too cold, too warm, too windy or you are simply with children, you might end up skipping half of it as the different parts are not very close to each other. And it is worth to see everything as it is all well kept and beautiful. You can take amazing pictures. I would only go between April and October, as long as the weather and the nature can show its best. If you spend more than a long weekend in Kiev, visit this place it is a great experience.
This is an interesting place but it is very exposed to the elements. Plan a visit on a mild day, try to find an English speaking guide so you can understand more. Except to pay some $20 to 40 for an afternoon for the guide.
A very nice place to feel the real spirit of Ukraine and visit different parts of the country in 1 place. Here you can find old houses dated from several centures ago, mills and other authentic constructions, as well as can eat Ukrainian food and buy souvenirs
If you can't travel all around Ukraine, but want to get some idea of how big and diverse this country is a good idea is to go to this open air museum that has typical buildings from the many regions of Ukraine. These buildings give you some idea of what it was like to live in Ukraine for the past five hundred years. The old houses and buildings really take you back to that time. The museum is located a short distance outside of Kiev, but can be easily reached. There is some public bus service that will get you close to it, but best to arrange a guide and car to take you there. On a nice Spring or Autumn day this is a great place to go and feel your in the Ukraine countryside. Next to this is some typical housing of the socialist era as well. You need about 4-5 hours to cover the whole area and maybe have a lunch there as well. Worth the time and cost of the visit.
Very interesting to see the change in the living lifestyles of Ukraine from hundreds of years ago to present.
The history and location a short distance from Kiev , tapestry display UKR design pottery plates and glass. so informative to see how lives were lived in the cutest of homes warm and cosy. family is everything.
If you want to get lost in a quiet calm place far from the urban life, you should go there, where everything would remind you about life in the village. Especially recommended for those who were born and lived in the village. You will find a lot of things that resemble you your own native village. Open air festivals and celebrations of Ukrainian traditional holidays are often performed there. Find time and visit every typical residental dwelling from every part of Ukraine. The cost of the entrance is UAH 30 for an adult. You can also rent a bike and enjoy riding, have a picnic on the lawn or visit small zoo with ostriches - the choice is yours. There are also places for eating -small cafes with traditional Ukrainian dishes.
Everytime full of people, Piragovo museum is a very big park. Inside you can find "small villages" in different period. It's possible arrive here by Mashrutka (the yellow small buses in Ukraine). There are mills, fields, good food, very good food, a lot of houses. The problem is that is so big and one day maybe is not enough.
I just Love it! Nature is everywhere, good food and the spirit of Ukraine! This place is stunning! Amazing
