This is one of the oldest and largest monasteries and churches you can see. It is a must see if you visit Kiev.WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW1. The complex is huge over 100 buildings2. Pay the money get a guide for the caves and for the upper church part.3. The complex is big guides will help you through and give you the history of the place4. Probably avoid Sundays and days of worship, there are more people there then. 5. You can take photos in certain places but not in othersThe complex is huge, there are over 100 buildings many of which you can see. I organised a guide at the front of the complex cost 200UAH for about a 50 minute tour. This was money really well spent, short of not getting lost and knowing how to get to and navigate through the caves, I was able to get a sense of the history of the complex and all the saints in the caves. The caves are free to enter. The upper church part was fascinating though I should have gotten a guide again, the upper church part costs 50UAH to enter and more if you want to get a guide. Wondering through the top while it was nice it was just buildings there was little signage in English so it lost a but without having this context. Highly recommend getting a guide for the top too.If you have a group the cost per person comes down.

It is magnificent: the architecture, the view - everything is amazing. The sky over your head when you are in this sacred place. But when you go there be sure that you wear comfortable shoes as it is impossible to see it in 10 minutes.

This was a great place to visit just to see the brilliant paintings on the walls and the underground set of caves. Any good christian should visit here. If your not religious it may not appeal to you. The architecture was amazing.

Kiev has many beautiful churches but this monastery complex is probably the most exiting. The gilded screens and the artwork inside the richly painted churches is a must. The entry price is 50 grivnas - quite a lot for local people but a little over one pound Stirling to a visitor. If you want some internal photo graphs purchase a permit at 100 grivnas. You will be allowed to take photos inside but keep your ticket as you will probably be challenged. Well worth the visit.

If you only visit one place in Kiev, I recommend you to visit Lavra. Religion, history, art, beauty,... all in one place. UAH 50 entrance is worth it.

A must see on anyone's visit to Kyiv. The artwork in the cathedral and churches are stunning. To be honest, the caves were eerie, but I can certainly see how so many Orthodox Christians find it to be a spiritual experience. Incredible history.

One of the most amazing and well known tour attraction spot of Kiev, Ukraine! Visited in Aug 2012, Nov 2013, and Dec 2014. Overlooking the Dnipro when it was frozen creates a well awe-inspiring view there similar to that of Andreivsky Church. Mostly the shops inside the monastery are closed on Tue, when I visited but it overall creates a very unforgettable view while travelling there as a Chinese)) Love you Kiev, Ukraine!)) Discounts for students with valid IDs)) ISIC.

Really picturesque spot overlooking the Dnipro river. Lots of reviews have been written so I'll only note a couple of things. First, you basically should know Ukranian/Russian or go with someone that does or have a guide. It's a large complex and I didn't see anything in English and it's not intuitive finding the caves. I'm sure it could be done, but I was floundering a lot until I happened upon some Americans with a Kiev friend who was leading the way. I saw signs for guides for 39 UAH so very resonable. Second, I didn't find the caves to be as tight or claustrophobic as I expected. They're certainly mostly narrow, but I'm 6'3" and I generally was able to walk upright. It was also quite clean, dry and easy passage. Pretty fascinating place overall and really reflects on the monks dedication! No fee, but you're expected to purchase a candle that you use to guide your way (it wasn't totally dark, just pretty dim in places) and then you can leave it upon leaving. Various sizes and most common was 2 UAH (about .10 at current rate).

Quite an amazing site, packed with history and beautiful art, you need some time if you take a guide but will learn a lot, altrenatively do it on your own, do visit the catacombs

You should definitely visit this place, to get your own insight and feeling of how cradle or orthodox church looks like. Architecture and inner decoration of churches is very prominent. An excursion to underground (only guided tours go full route underground) will complete your experience - to see tombs and mummies of priests.

A nice way to spend half a day, the history is very interesting, there is a fair bit of walking to do but worth it.

We enjoyed the lovely café while waiting for our English speaking tour guide (she was a delight!). The pastries and breads are made onsite and are relatively cheap. The tour began with our guide describing all the features and pointing out landmarks on the skyline so we could orient ourselves. We then walked over to the Lavra entrance and into a small chapel with marvelous paintings and frescos. I had worn a skirt that covered my knees and tall boots, but a friend had worn pants so she donned an apron like skirt over her pants before we could enter the caves. My husband had to remove his hat. Our tour guide narrated while we walked through the caves. She described each of the saints and how the monks stayed in solitude. Overall, this was a neat experience - extremely unique and a must see while in Kyiv.

The monastery is beautiful and the caves are very interesting. They even have an English tour depending on the number of English speakers requesting it. If you really want it they will provide a private guide for a high price. They only downside to cave tour is the passages are very narrow.
