Originally a double tracked railway and part of the main line, it is now a single track and used only for tourist trains. This meant plenty of stops along the way to photograph the views and wander through disused tunnels. There is a long stop for lunch. Our tour had pre-booked a meal at a local Babushka's house but there was some discussion about the bill as our leader deemed it much poorer value than when he visited last year. The Russiaan tourists brought thier own food as there was no cateering on the train. It is a full day out and at around 1830, connects with the ferry from Port Bakal to Listvyanka. Then an hour by road back to Irkutsk. Recommended.
Easy hiking waits for you if you choose to travel this part of railway. On the one hand you'll have beautiful and clean Baikal lake, on the other hand you'll have some rocky walls to climb or just admire. Many places to install a camp and spend few days here. It's windy and sunny here at summer, usually. And in winter ( January-May) you can walk around frozen lake surface and have different experience.
We enjoyed aspects of the circumbaikal, the scenery was stunning and the line itself is a marvel of engineering, what we found EXTREMELY unpleasent however was that most of the local were so drunk that they couldn't even stand a few of them even had to be carried onto the train, there were a couple of violent altercations in the aisle and a few people who fell asleep on the floor, beautiful, but not fun
the service was very good, it was also possible to go for a short part on the locomotive. this train stopps very often and you have the chance to explore around.
We traveled on the Circumbaikal Railway, a twelve hour trip on the rails that took four years to build in 1900. I had read about the lake and the Circumbaikal Railway. I grew up at the tip of Lake Superior, a beautiful lake, and had always wanted to see Lake Baikal, the largest and deepest lake. That is one of the many reasons we came to Siberia. Now we would spend a long day slowly traveling from Irkutsk to Port Baikal. We were with a guide and a third member of our very small tour group, and were in the midst of mainly Russian speaking travelers. That was fun in itself, with their singing, drinking vodka, and eating fish that was sold at each stop. Over the twelve hours, our guide had arranged food for us, too.The lake is beautiful, so clear that one can see the rocks in the lake. We stopped many times and got off the train to explore the area. Once, the train stayed behind us ever so slowly moving behind as we walked ahead and through a tunnel. I loved the trip, except for one big problem. Each time we stopped, a person stood outside talking about the importance of the area, in Russian. Although we asked our guide to translate for us, it almost never happened. We lost a great deal by not being able to understand what was being explained at each of the stops on our journey. We recommend that you take this trip, but when you do, you also ensure that your guide will tell you about the area you are seeing.
Each meter of Circumbaikal Railaway is a brathtaking view of Baikal impossible to forget. I travelled by the local train from Sludyanka in June 2009. One way trip takes about 4 hours 30 minutes so it makes sense to stay for at least 1 night in Port Baikal (final station) and to enjoy local nature and hospitality. Circumbaikal Railway was one of the main impressions of my trip to Baikal, I can strongly recommend it to all tourists: locals and foreigners as I can't beleive someone may not like it.
travelled along the road by boat - the best way to see its beauty. Take a private boat and you will get unique experience and photos
We booked this railway tour with the local agent who arranged our lodgings and everything for our TranSiberian trip. The train moves slowly around the lake, bringing you various views of the lakes and the surroundings. There are stops to venture the villages and other scenic spots. Though the tour comes with a sandwich pack, we prefer the local meals during a lunch stopover at a village. The staff on board is also very nice, always making sure we get on in time during each stop. Don't venture too far from the group as the stops are all at remote places. It's a whole day tour till sunset.
Travelling on the original Circumbaikal line was a spectacular experience. We were travelling on the "Zarengold" and found the journey, at very slow speed to be one of the 'journeys of a lifetime'. We readily took advantage of paying a few Euros to ride on the outside of the engine for part of the journey - something that will live in our memories!
Must take this excursion. No words can describe the beauty of the lake, you just have to see for yourself.
