Went with a car to the top and felt on the top of the world. Breathtaking views, marvelous place.Among my favorite mountain tops in Bulgaria.
When the weather is clear the view over the surrounding mountains is just astonishing. Do not miss this peak is you are in the Bansko region!
Brilliant easy walk, parking can be tricky, so arrive early or be prepared for a longer walk into the hills. Well marked, great views.
We started off at Hut Vihren and started our climb towards peak Vihren. It was a warm sunny day but even then bring some extra clothes for when you close in on the peak. Also fill your water bottles with at least 1L/person as there, unlike most other mountains in Bulgaria, are rare opportunities to refill your water bottles. The climb gives you loads of incredible views and is well worth the effort! A truly beautiful place!
It is great for people who like trecking and hiking. It is in Pirin, one of the most beautiful mountains in Bulgaria. It offers many things to do.
I simply love Alpine type mountain Pirin with its highest peak Vihren- 2900m. Most of the routes to other huts start by Vihren hut. If you have strong legs and strong will to walk a lot you will see wonderful views. The Foal ridge is near by the peak, a place that can take your breath away but I don't reccomend it to people with zero mountain experience because it's diffucult and dangerous. If you have luck- you can see edelweiss flower under Vihren peak on his North side. The North side is slight and rocky- you have to be very cautious there.Best time for visiting - mid of August until the end of it- before and after that period is very cold and rainy. It's good to make a reservation - in the summer period is pretty crowdy and somethimes there are no places available. On the way down from Vihren hut to Bansko resort, in the left side you can see Baikousheva white fir - a 1300 y. old tree.
Went to top in Minibus and walked 14 k down to Bansko. Lovely forest covered mountain and great views.
I stayed in Bansko and wanted to climb Vihren. I got a taxi to Vihren Hut as this would be a walk of more than hours otherwise! It wasn't expensive. Fortunately the hotel I was staying in had told me to follow the red and white flags as I'd have gone the wrong way! The flags aren't always obvious, but if you don't see any for a while, you've gone wrong. It was a good climb for just under 3 hours taking my time to the top. There were fantastic views at the top and I was lucky it was so clear.I went back the way I had come. I did ask at the hut if they would call me a taxi to go back to Bansko, but they wouldn't. Perhaps it was the language barrier, but I did manage to get a lift back.
The view from the top from Vihren hut is well worth the steep climb, but take care: if you want to decent the North side of the mountain, you better know what you're getting yourself into: it is very steep on rough terrain with a lot of loose stones, gravel and sharp rocks and there is not really a path. If you slip, you might really get into trouble. Only attemps this when you have at least some experience with moutain walking and with appropriate shoes. Good chance of snow in June and earlier.
After a lovely drive up the mountain roads we reached Vihren Hut for the start of a 6 hour walk in the mountains.
Amazing view and fresh air. Also, a great way to meet new friends from all over the world. I had a nice chat with a top model from Uzbekistan.
Great place to get away from it all and get lost in the white outs, great views and quaint little mountain huts all over to grab a coffee and warm up a bit .
been there many times, crossing between huts, great view and great hiking, recommend staying in local huts - that way you dont have to carry food, drink or tents - nice for a week hike!
-pros/something that i have never seen again./WiFi at top/nice and safe lift/cheap coffee/nice facility's- cons/at ticket place was too crowded and you must stay at line and at cold to get your tickets/no 1 tells you where you will stop with your lift.. when we saw the middle station we though that we should get off but no one did it so we didn't too.
There is Mount Vihren and there is hut Vihren..., and may be there is hotel Vihren in Bansko - you have to specify !Mount Vihren is a marvelous place, but it is reached only by foot (or a helicopter) luckily :). It is the highest peak in Pirin mountain (2914 m). About several hours walk from hut Vihren.Hut Vihren is not a place I will recommend to sleep at. ... Anyway it is a basic point for climbing Mount Vihren. There is an asphalt road between it and Bansko - apr. 30 min drive.
