Some really fine treasures - especially the Thracian gold goblets - extremely well laid out with clear explanation (in good English as well as Bulgarian) of the many cultures and civilisations who have left their mark in this area. Some beautiful objects, well displayed.
This petite museum has one of the best displays of Thracian gold outside of Sophia. It doesn't take long and there were very few other visitors, but it's worth a quick look. It would help if there were a few other languages on the displays, but the artifacts speak for themselves! Like the others have said, no photos and unfortunately very limited printed materials are available in any language.
The archaeological museum has a wonderful selection of artifacts from Thracian times through to medieval ages. Predominantly Thracian, Greek and Roman objects chart the development of Plovdiv through the ages and there are some stunning displays. Its a real shame that no photography is allowed despite as other reviewers have noted, but apart from this its well worth a visit.
If you are in Plovdiv the archaeological museum is really worth a visit. Very interesting and rich material, impressive for all kinds of visitors. It's really a pity that you're not allowed to take pictures: as no English or French catalogue book is available (but also Bulgarian), you won't remember anything of your visit, unless you write some notes and draw some sketches. Really hard to understand who may possess today the copyright of 6-7 thousands years old artifacts...

If you are at all interested in archaeology then you should visit, entrance is the standard 5 levs and the exhibits are well presented with signage in English . They have a range of artefacts from all the different periods right back to the Neolithic and some stunning gold treasures. There are toilets but no cafe, and the staff were helpful for example advising us where the nearest restaurant bar was. There are reasonable postcards and a few other items to buy in the shop. The staff were anxious that we did not miss a room with a temporary exhibit, this is packed with mainly Roman artefacts which have been found over the last couple of years during building or road works. You can't go anywhere in Plovdiv without seeing Roman remains, much of it just lying around or maybe cut in half by a road - although some buildings are now tidied up and protected, much else is not. Anywhere else you would have to pay to visit such ruins!
The displays of archaeological artifacts are breathtaking - They really have some amazing items. However my visit was tarnished by rude brutish security. There was no visible no-photo signs in any room, so when I tried to photograph the displays as I have done in museums before, I was quite angrily and rudely shouted at by one guard who came running into the room. I apologized and commented to a museum attendant that there was no visible signs indicating photographs were prohibited.I was told that there were signs on the way in to the museum in the foyer. Then soon after came another security guard to demand I deleted the few photos I had taken. I went to the foyer only to find that the Museum staff had placed a display completely blocking from view the no photograph sign on the way in, and there was no other signs in any part of the museum. When I brought this to the attention of the first security guard who was nearby - Another guard attempted to threaten me with angry posturing and threats.Thankfully I am not easily intimidated. The museum is truly an Aladdin's cave of wonderful artifacts and treasures - Pity they hire apelike thugs to work there.
One of my favourite museums ever. A total of 4-5 rooms offering very concise and to-the-point information about Plovdiv. The jewel in the crown definitely is the Panagyurishte treasure which will make your head spin and is well worth visiting for in itself.
bette than what I expeted. I expected an old museum smelling like dust and collection presented with little or very academic presentation in Bulgarian only, but not at all. Presentationsare in English and quite accessible.
Easy to reach by bus or foot. Much was signed in English which was welcomed. Well laid out. Uncrowded.
Unfortunately we had rather a rushed visit due to arriving about 30 minutes before closing time. We were still charged full price and had staff hovering and openly reminding us that they were closing soon for the last 20 minutes. There were about six small rooms, each one covering a different period of the city. The displays were very professional, fairly well set up and had descriptions in Bulgarian and English. From the brief look we had, one thing that seemed to come out was there is a lot of gold and money on display for all sorts of periods. One useful feature was a set of baggage lockers in the entrance lobby - was great to have a break from carrying the bags for a few minutes.
