the ticket was 100 HRK (15€), but the view is worth of every cent :D give it a try... not sure that the same price is in the summer (June, July, August)
Once in Dubrovnik, you should really try it! it is very easy to get to departing point, and it takes only a couple of minutes to get by cable car to the top of the mountain. Tip - I've been told to rather go in the afternoon, cause of the crowds, and I really ddin't wait long for my ride.
The views from the top make using the cable car a worthwhile thing to do. While you're up there visit the museum to learn more about the heroic effort to keep Dubrovnik safe in the war.It was a clear, sunny day when we visited and so you could see for miles. Breathtaking.
The Dubrovnik Cable Car is definitely one of the best attraction in the city, but not the cheapest one. As I remember I paid around 14 Euro for one ticket. Well, it seems like a little bit too much, but... the panoramic view from the mount is just amazing, so it was totally worth it!
Although the start of the trail is a little tucked away, hiking up Mt Srdj is the best way to take in its stunning views. The rocky track consists of hairpin after hairpin up the steep hillside. Each corner offers a more breathtaking views than the last, and it gets better all the way to the top. We visited on a sublime day yet the track was uncrowded and, in my books, beats the cable car any day. It will take anything from 20 minutes to complete the climb, depending on your level of fitness - it's no stroll in the park so be sure to wear appropriate footwear as there are loose rocks and the trail is relatively steep. If you're looking for something active, away from the crowds, and free, you can't go wrong. As for the views - you have to see it to believe it
The cable car is (Dec 2014) 13 eur and if you combine with the museum ticket, 20 eur. On a sunny day, however, you can simply find the hiking trail to the top. It's not a difficult hike and it wil take you 30-40 minutes. Make sure to bring good boots. As you go up, unforgettable views can be photographed and if you start climbing 1hr before dark, the sunset from the top is fantastic. The museum is also interesting, despite the building being in a decrepit state. To go back, you can take the road (bring a flashlight) and hitchhike back to town.
Cable car was too pricey for us, plus my fear of heights, so we went with a car up to the top. For those wanting to do the same, from the main road called Magistrala, going South, after you pass Dubrovnik, on the left side look for a yellow sign Bosanka, turn there onto what it seems one way side street since very narrow, and follow it to the top. The view is so spectacular!! Also there is a caffee and a restaurant with the open terrace with prices a bit higher but equal to the location I would say. Inside the building, where the cablecar is coming, there are toilets and souvenir shop. There is also an old Forth from Napoleon's time with a museum with photographs from the civil war 1990's and Dubrovnik. The parking was free at the time we were there but who knows for the future. This view is a must to see while in Dubrovnik!!Enjoy!
Oh my god the view was amazing at the top! We went up around 3:30pm, and the sun was starting to set, which just made the view even more unrealistically beautiful. My only regret is that if I went up earlier, i would have been able to walk down rather than take the cable car down, because it would have been wonderful to see the views changing over the course of the down-climbing. And dont miss the last cable car down at 5pm! If you miss that one, the only other option in the dark might be taxi!
We did the cable car ride on a clear day - views are great - no long queues ( although this was the last week in October and also fairly early in the morning). Would recommend. Breathtaking views once at the top - also visited the fortress and museum while at the top.
Bit of a queue at the entrance, but worth the wait. Need to have a clear day. Coffee at the top is great and the loos worked well and we're well serviced.
Doesnt matter if you walk or get the cable car, fantastic view and a must visit if in Dubrovnik. Eat lunch up there.
For a more rewarding, much cheaper alternative to the cable car, do the simple hike up the hill instead. The views are simply stunning, and you'll miss out all the waiting time for the cable car (in high season the queues can be very long!). Plus you'll save £10 per person return ticket! If you're getting a bus in from the hotels in Babin Kuk, as we were, then get off about four stops before Pile Gate, and save yourself most of the steps up form the Old Town. If you can use Google Maps on your smartphone it's easy to find the road where the trail starts which is Jadranska Cesta. The start of the trail can be a little tricky to find so I've uploaded a photo of what you'e looking for.The path is really quite easy - it's not at all steep (it zig zags up the mountain although it's a bit a bit rocky, but certainly not difficult for anyone with trainers. You don't need waking boots. It took us about 45 minutes to go up and you get fantastic views the entire way. In the heat of summer, make sure you have water and put sun screen on. At the top, you come out at the fort where there is a very interesting exhibition about the attack on Dubrovnik by the Serbs in 1991, with a video of news footage form the time, and lots of photos. The exhibition itself is not fantastically written in English, but gives lots of detail. I'd recommend talking to the guy selling the tickets as he was involved in the defence of the fort himself; it's interesting to speak to someone who was really there in the war.
The best thing about this excursion was the beautiful, unobscured view of the city from the walking track on the way back into the city. I was not so impressed by the views from the top, but mostly because I love taking photos, and it was impossible to do this without having the cable car cables in my shots. There is not much at the top unless you'd like an expensive, scenic beer, overpriced trinkets (nothing you can't get in the old town) or to read about the war in Dubrovnik in taxingly broken English. If you want to walk, bring good shoes (hiking boots?) and be aware that most of the trek is exposed to the hot sun.
We started opposite the Pile gate. Weather was overcast which is just as well as you will certainly be warmer by the time you reach the top if you keep going! You start off climbing alot of steps for the first 5-10 minutes but it then gets a little easier by zig-zagging along at a steady gradient. At first we followed my Samsung phone navigation which was fine until you come across a road. Here you need to watch out as our navigation told us to follow the road which isn't particularly safe and takes you on a longer route. Instead when you see the road go left for about 5 minutes along it behind the safety barriers until you see an opening amongst some trees on the other side. Cross over and this then continues on a gravel path (good footwear recommended) until you reach the top.It was a little windy but not really any colder than down in Dubrovnik. It took us about 1 hr 5 minutes including some time to take a few photos along the way (I'm 47 & my wife is 53, average fitness). All in all well worth doing or you could take the cable car up and walk down if you prefer. Another plus is that you will get great views along a number of points on the way, not just near the top. Also we had a very nice coffee on arrival in the cafe which was much appreciated.
incredible hike up the mountain. The views are amazing. Most people take the cable car and sorely miss out on the best views the mountain has to offer. The views at the top were spectacular, but didn't match the amazing views offered from half way up the mountaintop on the well maintained foot path. A must do activity. About an hour and ten minutes up from old town and forty five minutes down!
