Only went around the island on a boat. There were lots of inlets and small looking caves. I understand during the summer you can be dropped off and picked up later. I think it would be a lovely place to have a picnic and a swim.
The island looked very inviting from our hotel at breakfast but didn't have the time to visit it. Next time!
I took the ferry here alone to hike during the day. I brought a lunch and drinks with me to save money. You can hike along the sea, it's beautiful. Some paths however are uphill and downhill with lots of rocks and rubble. Usually the hikes to the main attractions and near the water are better maintained and should be fine for all hikers and all ages. Lots of wildlife. Perhaps you will see the black bunny?
a small island in front of the old town of Dubrovnik. You must see it. The island is beautiful, mystical, full of beautiful flora and fauna ......... clear sea surrounding it in which need to just dive ............ sunset on Lokrum is the most romantic thing I saw ............. simply must visit
It was good to get away from the scrum of visitors in Dubrovnik, and the island is very pleasant and green. The cafe at the monastery is good, surrounded by greenery and with the added attraction of peacock chicks. A good day out.
An absolute haven, and one I now think of when I want to relax. The Peacocks by the see are amazing. Walk to the opposite side of the island to where the boat lans, again discount with the Dubrovnik card! steps to the see and sun bathing area. take a picnic and chill!
This island is very close to Dubrovnik - just a couple of hundred metres out from the old harbour. You can get a ferry across from the old harbour, they are regular and you can buy a ticket on the day from a vendor who stands on the dock just next to the boat. The island is peaceful and much less crowded than the city. It is largely wooded so is cool and shady on a hot day, and has a photogenic coast with some rocky beaches. It is inhabited by peacocks. There are some sights such as a saltwater lake. It's small and easy to get around, and a nice place for a walk within very easy reach of the city. There are a couple of cafes and bars. If you're staying in Dubrovnik for a few days this makes a nice contrast to the city.
The Island of Lokrum is a great place to visit if you want to spend a few hours away from the tourist crowds in Dubrovnik. Just a short, scenic ferry ride from the Old City, Lokrum offers beautiful views of Dubrovnik and opportunities to explore. If you like abandoned structures/ruins, you'll love the old monastery. There is a botanical garden that features plants from all over the world, including a large collection of succulents. We didn't climb up to the old fort because we still wanted to walk the city wall, but I heard the views were spectacular. The only inhabitants of the island are peacocks, and the tourist traffic is light. If you're a fan of Game of Thrones, you'll recognize spots on the island. Great place to spend a couple of hours (or the day, if you're interested in swimming and relaxing).
Did you know a Games of Thrones was shot here. If that doesn't get your inquisitive juices flowing then try Las Vegas. Lokrum island is a small land mass just a mile from the old city port. It costs only a bus fare to the island and back. There are not many places to drink and eat and they are still renovating some buildings which could possibly be great venues in the future. We stopped for lunch before stumbling upon a hidden sunken pool deep in the rock floor, about 15 minutes walk from the cafe. Not many people know of this place so it was an absolute dream to swim virtually alone in this clear rock pool, shaded from the midday sun by shear rock walls and over hanging trees. There is apparently a nudist part of the island but we never saw any completely nude people. It would take a whole day to walk around the whole island, but the views from certain points are amazing. Especially at the highest point where an old looking fort stands proud on the hill top. This is where they shot a scene from Game of Thrones.
This little island is what makes Dubrovnik one of the best places for a vacation in Europe. The water is fantastic, and even though the island is quite small, it's still more than enough space for everyone. A small minus is that you have to wear bathing-shoes because of the sharpk rocks.
Nice quiet spot to go when you get tired of crowds and tourist traps. Hiking trails and easy walkways are available. The beaches are good and the restaurants serve good, well prepared food.
Fantastic island of botanical parks, little bars and wondering peacocks... Great way to spend extra afternoon
Since there aren't great beaches in Dubrovnik; Lokrum is fun to visit because the flat rocks lining the island make perfect tanning beds. The water is crystal clear and there are plenty of secluded spots to claim for a relaxing 'beach' day.
A great boat ride out to this island. Saw a huge owl (unexpected) and a nudist beach (even more unexpected!). As it was October it was very quiet but I can imagine it's a busy place in the summer.
We took a boat tour around the island which took about 45 minutes. The tour guide told us stories about the island, namely that the house that is there is cursed, and anyone who previously bought it died in mysterious circumstances, so now the house is left empty. There were people on the island who were swimming off the rocks, and on the opposite side of the island away from the Old Town, there is a locals nudist beach which has been there for the last century. There was also a quarantined area during the 17thC epidemic.Locals have many tales about the island, which may or may not be true, but it made the boat trip fun. There are stunning views towards Old Town from the island.A 15 minute ferry trip can be taken to get you onto the island, and you can stay, swim and explore the flora and fauna.
