The mud pots were awesome! We walked around for about 30 or 40 minutes watching all the bubbles and rainbow colored water on the ground. Definitely check it out if you're doing the ring road
You can't bypass this awesome sight as it's located just off the main road into Lake Myvatn. The bubbling mud, steaming water, and erupting water spouts are just spell-binding to observe. It's so conveniently located just at the base of the lava fields. My husband and I returned a second time on our way out of Lake Mvatyn for a second look.
It would be criminal to miss this out of world sulphuroursly steamy spectacle, really easy to get to.
(may trip 2014) I cannot said how we was surprised to see this site between the snow mountain. in May it's was very unique to see. So as it's directly beside the road it's easy to take some time to visit it.
Walked though heavy snow from the road, but it was worth it. Very unique spot with open sulphur pits. Totally different experience. Worth a thirty minute stop.
This place is awesome, steam and mud come out of the earth, sulfur is everywhere, the mud pots are amazing to sea. The landscape is unique. Well worth a stop, see my photos...
Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. A very deceptive ascent, but well worth it once you're at the top, amazing views.
Excellent fumarole area with lots of whistling, puffing and bubbling from down below. But also the only paid access in Iceland we have encountered. Easy to access from the road and therefore many tour buses spit out their people there. Fortunately you can take the path up the Hverir overlook (to all sides, including Myvatn lake itself!) to enjoy totally different fumarole field, much better and nicer than the one below. Good trekking shoes recommended though because of slippery, muddy surface on the clim and walk down the slopes.
Defibately worth a stop and not at all our of your way. Really interesting area that is right on the ring road. Do a quick walk around, take some pictures and move on to the next place. Would not recommend skipping such an easy place to see!
Amazing! It did smell of sulfur but it was unlike any place I have ever been to. It is like being on a different planet. Worth a visit.
I was just blown away by the fact that we could go so close to the steaming vents, mud pots, and boiling water! We were lucky enough to be there on a warm sunny day and the colors in the pools was very beautiful. Had a great time walking around, taking pictures and soaking in the beauty. Highly suggest going.
I thought this was really cool to swe, smelled quite a bit but u get kinda used to it, for dreamed while dooming a selfie but hey, its all part of the fun, when u look away from all the people and man made things like signs etc its really like a different planet, come see for urself, won't be disappointed.
this was worth stopping to see and it was just off the ring road route #1. very smelly but totally worth exploring. we didn't have time to climb to top.
For those of us, who haven't seen the whole world and aren't impressed anymore- this is an amazing place! IMHO, it is the second best reason to visit Myvatn area: Mother earth's hot heart at work! Expect tour buses and really muddy shoes (hard to remove)! It is not quite a good place for visitors with Asthma - but given sufficient wind, you can work out the right approach to the fumaroles. It may not happen to everyone, but I once had the coating of my glasses etched by the sulfuric acid fog - so we made sure to flush our glasses after that visit with plenty of water. If you are unlucky enough not to have the time to visit Namafjall, just stop off the ring road #1 between Reykjavik and Hveragerdi. There are other (way smaller) hot and active fields like Namafjall: e.g. Hellishei∂arvirkjun.
A great place to wander around and thank heavens the Icelanders are very relaxed about health and safety. Be aware its dangerous so do bring the kids - they will be awe inspired - but do keep them on a short lead to stay safe.
