I am an avid hiker, and love adventure, but I had never backpacked before, and I am NOT built for that. The views were amazing, but I was in pain the entire time! It took us 7 hours to hike from the base camp to the first stop, so we gave up & went back the next day, got some amazing photos though
If you are looking for a varied hike, that's challenging but not unachievable by a person of average fitness, a hike in which the scenery and challenges constantly changes, no shops, no roads, fantastic people, and freezing cold river crossings then this is the hike for you! I have written about my experiences of the hike that I did in August, 2014 on my blog http://muddymam.blogspot.co.uk.
One of the best hikes in the world. Scenery is always changing and uncovering new and unexpected beauty. I'd recommend going in July or August. Take your time and enjoy the hike. The attached day hikes are highly recommended!
If you like beautiful, changing scenery, this is a hike you really should do at least once. We spent 3 days doing the hike from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork, but could easily spend there a few more days on various shorter side hikes, if we had the time. One important thing to note: the weather will make all the difference. We were incredibly lucky with clear skies and nice temperatures for the entire time. The hike is physically not extremely demanding, but if you're carrying all the food and camping gear as we were, it's still challenging and you need to be fit. The nature around you more than makes up for the effort! The campsites are very basic, Hrafntinnusker being by far the worst in terms of bathroom facilities.
All the stuff you hear about Iceland - its' scenery, sense of nature, magnificence is true about this place. Making your way tp Landmannalaugar, if U have a opportunity take superjeep, crossing rivers and moon, crater-landscape towards the parkOnce arrived enjoy a hike crossing the lava field when all of a sudden, this plateau of stunning colours appear before your eyes. The colours in the rhyolite mountains defied my expectations.Further enjoy a warm bad in the river or visit the natural fumerols spitting out sulphur. Really spectacularHighly recommended
All the stuff you hear about Iceland - its' scenery, sense of nature, magnificence - was summed up in this hike. Making your way from Landmannalaugar, crossing the lava field when all of a sudden, this plateau of stunning colours appear before your eyes. The feeling you get when this happens is beyond words. The colours in the rhyolite mountains defied my expectations. The best part of my trip to Iceland without a doubt! You do have to be of a certain level of fitness, not too much though. Some trails are very steep and vertigo-inducing but are highlighted on the map the tourist office sells but only helps to make this place feel as rugged and as far away from commercialised as possible. Cannot recommend enough!
The scenery here was spectacular, the hiking was great, and basking in a hot spring in the middle of nowhere was great fun. Visiting Laugavegur was one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland. The beauty, peacefulness, and lack of commercialism made this place unforgettable for my husband and me!
The colours of the mountains here are incredible, great views and fresh air! There's also natural hot springs that you can take a dip in and chat to the other locals before going on your way. Unfortunatley though, there are flies EVERYWHERE! literally, they are constantly flying into your face, mouth, ears (bring sunglasses!), so much that a few of the people on the guide had to give up before really setting off. Also this is very far from Reykjavik.
This is a must do trek for lovers of epic treks and hikes. Between the huts/campsites, there are no bathroom facilities, nor is there tree cover. The huts charge 1000 ISK to recharge each battery or cell phone.
Great valley with beutiful landscape and an awesome hot spring! But be careful to bring a regular rent car because it's dust roads there and you can get stuck...
Wow. On a gray, rainy, cloudy day, this place and the hot-spring-fed river were amazing. We walked among the Laugahraun (lava field) and almost got lost. We saw colors of rocks that seemed fake. I bathed in the river away from the crowd and enjoyed seeing how hot I could take before allowing myself to float away from the spring. I didn't enjoy the crowds, but tried to pretend that I was all alone. Don't miss this, please!
You walk from the camp along the obsidian field, then you see gas comming out of earth, you climb the Blahnúkur hill - and get a beautiful sight on the colored mountain rise. You finish the trip in the thermal water in the camp. A round trip for 2 hours. Take food with you - in the camp is just one old car rebuild to a bar - they have coffee and low alcohol beer, but I did not see anything to eat.
My wife and I drove into Landmannalaugar via F225 from the west, stayed the night at the campground, and left down F208 south. The drive and scenery were diverse and fantastic, like nothing we've ever seen.We rented a Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 (we didn't feel like taking our chances with a 'regular' 4x4). The river crossings were fun after we got over the apprehension of the first one. It was overcast and rainy on the days we went and I would love to do it again on a partly-cloudy day.We stayed at the hut at the campground, chilled in the hot springs, shared food with other travelers, and hiked around the surrounding mountains (in the cold rain). Unforgettable.
We went out there for the day on a jeep trip with Iceland South Coast Travel. The hike we did from Landmannalauger was among the very best of the many my family has done. The views are stunning in every direction - things I have never seen anywhere else. The lava fields are fun to cross. The trail is not too challenging (but you can make it so by climbing on the lava formations). The chimneys of the hot springs were cool. And afterwards, we went for a dip in the hot spring. The one negative I would point out is that the campsite is crowded in August. This is not the isolated place I expected. Though once out hiking, it is. And I suspect the large crowds make for a good time at night, meeting like minded people from around the world. The drive there and back, with the great stops at other spots found by Almar of South Coast Travel was almost as much fun as being there You need a 4 wheel drive. After seeing it, I realize I could have driven it myself, but it was nice having a guide and the added cost of having rented a 4 wheel drive for the week instead of a little car would have cost about the same in total.
We had the best luck as it was a sunny day when we got there (apparently it was the first and only sunny day in the whole month) so we got to see all the colours as you see in the photographs. It is an amazing walk and the landscape is awesome. There are suppose to be two short walks you can do from here but the most popular is through Laugavegur. The trail head isn't hard to find because so many people are heading in the same direction. It's just opposite from the carpark. It starts off a bit of a struggle uphill, narrow, rocky track and then it flatens and widens out into a dirt track. You start by walking through lava fields and then it opens out into a valley with the famous multicolour hills. You see a row of tripods just off the track as people try to take that postcard shot. If you feel up to it you can keep walking up the steep hill to get a great view of the surrounding area.
