This would have been an easily accessible crater had there been no snowy ground when I paid a visit. As the past weeks of this winter was not nice in weather in any sense overall, the snowy floor concealing much of the wooden staircase for climbing the crater made certain parts especially the lowest flights of stairs very slippery for all ages. As the snow also absorbed much of our feet when we were climbing the hill and theer was little sunshine when we started the climb, soem of our group stopped half way through and spent much of the time taking photos from areas well below the crater. When you have the chance to look at the real crater up there, you will agree that it is just a very small crater for all interested people to get a feel and that is it. So in terms of a crater of the type, this is not in any way magnificent unless you happen to be the first-timer for seeing one. What you may say are nice should not be the crater itself but the views of valleys, mountains and small cottages around from any level of or below the crater on that hill when there is any least enough sunshine or not heavy snow for making your views and photographs disappointing.
Spectacular sight, you can climb to the top and see the crater and amazing views, see the photos. At the top you can walk around the edge of the crater.
Grábrók is nice easy hike and on a good day you can get amazing photos. Check it out, completely worth it!
Visited Grabrock this afternoon... You see the crater heading east on 1 just in Bifrost (you honestly can't miss it). The parking lot closest to the ascent is not where the gift shop and building are, but just a little bit down the same road, on the left.. Just a little parking lotwith a sign. The climb up is pretty easy, as the steps are quite shallow... Even those with bad kneels can probably handle them. climb to the top of the crater, going left as you go up, and the walk the rim around to get a view of the second, and more impressive crater in back of the first. Wear good layers, as it's much colder and can be windy up on top. We left in relative warmth and sunshine and ended up in cold windy rain. (Welcome to Iceland!). Allow 45 minutes (minimum) to an hour or more, depending on how much time you want to wander around. But if you only have 20 minutes, don't skip it.. Just hoof it to the top and look around anyway... The scenery of the valley is spectacular. You can probably do this one in tennis shoes.
Not well marked but we saw lots of cars parked and stopped. The stair climbing was tough but the view of the crater and the surrounding scenery was well worth it.
The crater is a good example of an intact crater and is worth the walk up. Do not expect too much, though.
You cannot miss this site as you drive by on Route 1. It's a lovely spot to stop for a walk; there's a nice view from the walkway along the rim and there's a nice information sign describing the geology of the site.
Craters, to me, are all the same in every way, but the pleasant walk up there seeing them is always a unique experience. A 20 minutes walk up the stairs during sunset was amazing. It's on the ring road so there's no way of missin this place!
It was windy, but a nice climb and view. What else can I say, go there if you are in the neighborhood. If you are staying at the Bifrost Hotel or University, its right next door.
We had dinner nearby and then climbed up the volcano at midnight. No one there, just nature and the sun ;-)Fantastic !
The crater is in Bifröst, just next to the road 1, you just cannot miss it when you´re driving by. Take a stop at the parking lot and climb up the stairs to the top - on nice weather the view is great. It is forbidden to climb on the crater anywhere else exept on marked paths, since the lava is very vulnerable and the soil could damage. We stopped by on our way driving around the island. Nice, short visit. The climb is average high, not for bad-legged persons even when the stairs help the climb.
