In Turkey, Istanbul and the Aegean coasts monopolize the cultural tourism visitors. Nevertheless, important remaining and monuments of cultural heritage can also be found in Ankara. The Temple of Augustus is one among them. At the walls still remaining, Ancient Greek expressions could be read. The most impressive point for this monument is its current location; almost aside to the Haci Bayram Mosque, one of the most important Mosques of Ankara. This location signifies the cultural diversity of the Area. Very important monument of cultural heritage, which is not so much advertised by the local authorities. Due to bad or late restoration, very small part of the monument still remains.
I consider myself lucky to have been able to see this site. Its significance cannot be under estimated due to the role it played in Ancyra and the Roman period in central Turkey. The wall is held up by scaffolding and internally as well...not to sure how long it will last so see it now if you can
The temple monument has crucial importance for the history of the region at the beginning of the Roman imperial period: it monumentalizes Roman dominance, and also preserved the most complete inscribed copy of Res Gestae divi Augusti (a magnificent piece of imperial propaganda about the achievements of Augustus). I'm also intrigued by the reuse of the building by at least three distinct religious traditions--Roman, Byzantine Christian, and Islamic. Unfortunately, it's hard to get close to the front of the monument or the side with some preserved (but worn) inscription. Still worth a visit. And it's free.
It's an important monument of Ankara. Honestly, there's only a little to see but seeing funerary inscriptions of Roman Emperor Augustus is really priceless for an archaeologist/historian. Next to the monument, you can see Hacı Bayram Veli Mosque. I think it's not really common to see a Roman Temple and an Ottoman Mosque together. So, definetely worth to visit.
Well, I was hopeful but really there is not much left. Just a bit of a wall. Most Turks I asked had no idea what I was talking about...the Haci Bayram Mosque is right next to it so... ask for the Mosque. Will take about 10 minutes to see the whole thing and read the plaque... park beside it is nice though
it was a little bit tough to arrive there for a foreigner, It was kind of weird that Taxi drivers don' t know the . you must tell next to Hacı Bayram mosque
The wall of this ancient Roman temple is near Haci Bayram Mosque and Julian's Column. Information on the temple itself makes up for the relatively scant amount that there actually is to see. This probably isn't worth going too far out of your way but since it is nar Julian's colum and the mosque it's worth a look. I personally found the Roman baths way more interesting.
you can visit both Augustus Temple and Hacı Bayram Mosque together because the temple is besides the Mosque. During the construction of Hacı Bayram Mosque, they did not let the workers ruin the temple wall. Now, both pagan temple of roman period and the mosque of islamic period get along well together. The traditional Ankara houses around the temple are being renovated and after the termination of Hamamönü project, it will be amazing. Most of the houses are just renovated and you can visit the traditional stores through the narrow streets. You can eat Hacı Bayram Döner at well-known restaurant of Hacı Bayram close to the Temple site. The view of the Ankara citadel from the hill where the site is located is also interesting.
We visited on a friday and prayers were taking place so this area was packed and very atmospheric. The site isn't very big but is worth seeing.
Heel smaakvol.
