斯塔里斯和索泼查尼修道院

Spent my day at the monastery. Enjoyed the tranquility and ancient frescoes. They are in various states of what looks like restoration. The trip from Novi Pazar is around fifteen minutes and cost 10 Euro. My driver also waited for me while I visited. The area is very pastoral and we passed shepherds and monks tending their sheep flocks along the road and meadows. This site is not the most grand site I have seen but it has its merits. The church grounds are beautiful with old remnants and the church is in immaculate condition on the outside. I stopped in the Monastery store too and spoke with a monk about the various brandies and schnapps. They have other religious items for sale as well. Donations are accepted but no fee to enter. Just wear appropriate clothes.

I got in from an overnight bus from Sarajevo and had to wait for sunrise in a dingy cafe which served you Turkish coffee at 4:30 a.m. and ordered wonderful grilled sausages in a pita. The bathroom was one of the worst squat toilets i've ever encountered. The cook found me a local bus to take me to the monastery, and being there at daybreak, sitting on the terrace enjoying a complimentary coffee and brandy, waiting for the priests to show me in were a priceless experience! The frescoes were in amazingly good condition, and i recommend this side trip immensely.

Oh my god it took us some time to navigate through the Novi Pazar and find the way up to the Sopocani Monastery, but after that the visit was great. The monastery grounds are quaint and peaceful, the setting sun was painting beautiful pictures. There were other visitors along with us so the church was open, but I believe the gatekeeper is always ready to open it for you. Parking space right below the monastery, I believe there must be quite a number of tourists in summer.

Sopocani was the main reason why I came to this part of Serbia, and it was everything I'd hoped, not only the wonderful frescoes but also the monastery itself, in its beautiful setting, which came as a complete surprise. I agree that reading a bit about early mediaeval Serbian history (especially King Uros and Queen Ana) before you go will help. A visit to Sopocani Monastery is easily combined with one to the archaeological site of Stari Ras (once the capital of mediaeval Sebia), a few kilometres away on the road back to Novi Pazar, Djurdjevi Stupovi and St Peter's Church, near Novi Pazar, and the old Ottoman centre of Novi Pazar itself, with narrow streets and tiny shops, ancient Mosques and ruined Turkish baths. The Ecco Tourist Agency in Novi Pazar (tel 00381 20311575 - ask for Mr Esad) organised all of this for me, with a car and a driver (English speaking), and were exceptionally helpful and efficient. I'm sure they could also arrange a day trip to Studenica (on the road to Kraljevo) and Zica (near Kraljevo), also UNESCO sites. Perhaps even a trip to Pec. Sopocani has an excellent shop, selling icons, postcards, guide books and so on, run by Fathers Kosma and Paisie. People with mobility problems won't find Sopocani too difficult. After a few steps up from the car park, it's all well-maintained, level paths and lawns.

If you want to go there, its recommended to read historical facts. After that everything will be more interesting. Must see>Petrova church(the oldest., ) old castle Maglic (20 minutes walk from main road up hill).

I have been there in 2008. It is not easy to find it, but I reccomend everybody who like fresco painting to visit Sopocany Monastery.

Древний горный монастырь. очень красивый. Место весь уютное, но куда бы вы не ехали оно вам будет не по пути)

Горный монастырь немного вдали от основных дорог. Именно небольшое количество посетителей (в отличие от Студеницы) создают совершенно очаровательную атмосферу. Если Вы едете из Сербии в Черногорию, сделайте небольшой крюк.

На мой взгляд, этот монастырь - потрясающий образец старинной сербской архитектуры, которая основана в том числе и на сочетании построек с окружающим пейзажем. В монастырь мы добирались на машине ехали со стороны Нови-Пазар, оттуда совсем недалеко, дорога живописная и проложена вдоль речки. Территория монастыря показалась просторной, сразу у входя церковно-сувенирная лавка, дальше остатки старой ограды и самое интересное - церковь. Она со строгими линиями, выверенными пропорциями, но снаружи совсем немного украшений. Впечатляет она фресковыми росписями, выполненными несколько веков назад, которые хорошо сохранились, они и внутри и под входной аркой. Внутри прохладно даже в теплый день, особенно ногам - пол каменный и холодный, ноги замерзали. По территории возле церкви выставлены старинные каменные плиты, можно посмотреть било (используется вместо колоколов). Многоместная парковка в метрах 150 от входа.

Впечатляет своей внушительностью, древностью, раскопками. Очень интерсная местность вокруг. Красивые горы. Сам монастырь очень аутентичен и внушителен. Не размерами, а атмосферой.

Novi Pazar is gebouwd vanaf 1461 na de verwoesting van Trgovište en Stari Raš. Raš kende een oorsprong uit de 4e eeuw en lag later in het grensgebied van het Byzantijnse Rijk en het kleine koninkrijk Raška, waarvan het de hoofdstad werd. Raš kende zowel westerse als oosterse invloeden, wat zich toont in de monumenten. Nabij Novi Pazar ligt een groep van gebouwen die behoren tot het culturele erfgoed: 3 kerkgebouwen, de ruïne van het kasteelfort (Tvrđava Gradine) en de ruïne van de oude stad.15 km ten westen van Novi Pazar ligt Manastir Sopoćani. Deze kloosterkerk is gebouwd in 1260 en heeft schitterende fresco’s. In die periode werd Constantinopel bezet door de Kruisvaarders waardoor Byzantijnse kunstenaars elders emplooi zochten. Deze fresco’s worden tot de mooiste van de middeleeuwse schilderkunst gerekend. Het is verbazend dat de fresco’s de verwoesting van 1689 en ruim 2½ eeuw verlatenheid hebben doorstaan. Pas in de 2e helft van de 20e eeuw is het klooster heropend en gerestaureerd. Echt een bezoek waard. Indrukwekkend en adembenemend zo mooi.De Sint Pieterskerk (Petrova crkva), gebouwd in de 9e eeuw op de restanten van een Illyrische gebedsplaats en een vroege Christelijke kerk, vormde in de middeleeuwen het religieuze centrum. Heeft nog enkele fresco’s. Niet zo mooi als Sopocani. Wel boeiend om naar de geschiedenis te kijken.Het in 1171 door Stefan Nemanja gebouwde Manastir Đurđevi stupovi typeert de samensmelting van westerse en Byzantijnse architectuur. Voor Servische architectuur zijn de hoge kloktorens uniek. Helaas zijn ze net zoals de verdedigingsmuren deels vervallen. De kerk is goed gerestaureerd.Alle monumenten hebben hun geschiedenis en zijn daardoor boeiend. De fresco's van Sopocani waren voor mij het hoogtepunt. Vergelijk deze met het niet ver weg gelegen Studenica. Ook indrukwekkend en schitterend.

Sopocani est accessible en voiture (ou en taxi) depuis Novi Pazar. Venir le matin au lever du soleil, et n'hésitez pas à aller demander aux popes de vous ouvrir (la clé: klioutch) même s'ils n'ont pas l'air content. La lumière est magique, le lieu incroyable et les fresques émouvantes... une grande expérience qui vaut à elle toute seule le voyage.
