The sinagouge in Subotica is the most beutifool building in Subotica. Built before the big sity hall, wich is also an pearl in the center of Subota.

A short walk from the Town center is worth the view to see the beautiful architecture. In 1892 Adolf Geiger donated the Jewish community a site for the construction of a new synagogue, The Synagogue was erected in the Hungarian style, a unique architectural idiom in 1902. The Synagogue houses 850 seats for men on the ground floor and 550 seats for women on the gallery.

We could only view the exterior of the building, but it was definitely worth a stop for a photo opportunity.

Nice to see while walking through a Subotica. Now closed because of a reconstruction but still a great building from outside.

Beautiful building with rich and glory past, sad present and doubtful future. Nobody are interesting to investigate in restoration of this landmark. The Jewish comunity in Subotica and around is too small. The young lady which sale the tickets don't speake anything but Hungarian and know nothing about the past or present of Synagogue. Very, very sad!

In spite of being one of landmarks of Subotica and one of the most important monuments of Hungarian art nouveau in this city, this synagogue still awaits the funds for restoration; as far I could see, there have been some interventions on the outside of the dome, while the interior is in a rather bad shape. It's open to the public on Saturday only (from March to October) from 10 to 14. Inside, one can climb the galleries where once women sat in order to admire the now faded painted wall decorations and the stained glass windows. Once properly restored, this magnificent building could once again became either the place of worship (like the New Synagogue in nearby Szeged) or a concert hall (like in Novi Sad).

SUBOTICA, Synagogues and other interestingBORDERS AS DESTINYBy Zoran SlavićThis town in the north of the country, at the end or beginning of Vojvodina, Subotica, I remember, experience or discover in the memories of dozens of encounters, visions, passing, stays. This unusual town in northern Bačka I remember by interesting and talented people, and elegant buildings that have a long and distinctive history. First in my mind flies pictures of Subotica Synagogue. This impressive building, mild and conciliatory, simultaneously stout and luxurious, built in 1902. Designed by architect Marcel Chamber of Budapest and Dezso Jakab. From this oasis of peace, which is taken hold in the middle of rich vegetation, I extend further. Among the famous Suboticans. And in history. Talking to me Bosko Krstic, Mary Šimoković, Bella Durance to totally open the doors of this chaotic place snowed in memory. Because, as far as wearing Subotica, in architecture, culture, civic life and sediments of European panoramas, this is the city most likely filed a consequence of the rule of pseudo-communist doctrine of '' neurotic political instability in the border towns''. In a normal world, which has always been quite the opposite? The boundaries however not exactly Bridges, but for reasonable the people they are crossing and showcase. Subotica, where they live Serbs, Hungarians, Croats, Bunjevci as many flavors of previous nations (as Lika, Montenegrins, Bosnians ...) is a city that is checked by '' Czech'' model had to be a place complex ethnic, political, cultural, linguistic and semantic distinction comes down to a common denominator of every day, which is slightly closer to the neighbors than of God. So no matter how it may sound heretical. Subotica, which is mentioned in documents from 7 May 1391st and surely that is a little older, and I remember this - a large, discrete, moderately cheerful and always cultural. Unlike anything I have encountered. Since my first stay at athletics track stadium'' Spartacus'' in which I as a young man chasing fame, through Forests of mulberry, urban cafes and pastry shops, theaters, folk and children's, Painter's meeting, trams (repealed 1974). I know more than professional or private meetings with people who this incredible monument to the architectonics „Žolnaj “ colors, roofs and facades that are equally contemplative and visual attraction. All that gives meaning, subtext, and context and brought to life metaphysics, this city experienced with equal arousal and excitation. Because when Bosko Krstic, novelist and essayist, with a lot of meticulousness and irony enough tell the history of the '' blue vases from Palic Park “ (made of ceramic Žolnai) and'' her revolutionary destiny, when I listen to story-essay by art critic of the Bella Durance of wonderful stained glass Sandor Nagy, in the Town Hall of Subotica, while breathing echoing song Slavko Matkovic, who says: Just confuses me / Light which falls on the city / and gate with my number / ... I wonder if / whether I am in the towns / cities or are in me / Where am I Subotica ... and Šimoković Mary tells him of future past: the grain of sand dropped rain / of the light and heat began to sprouting / something like a tower in the midst of the river with a few coastal ... . I know that I will not, moving from Lifka mobile theater, to get out in storm, but directly into the Babylonian music that comes from the film festival on Lake Palic. This city on our very north Backa, sometimes broken down by all sorts of historical disasters, sometimes ambiguous, in turn, the entrance and the exit is in symbiosis Art Nouveau, modern, and sometimes agrarian, because many reasons Subotica has long followed the voice of the largest villages in Vojvodina, as it still was never. In this city there is always such a writer Milovan Mikovich said'' enough space for people of different backgrounds and different beliefs. In the cities, the violence is forced to give way to the power of words, speech ...'' On the way back from a walk through this Central European city - again Synagogue. Harmonious monumental building with a dome over the central part is enriched with structural innovations - the dome rests on an iron structure that carries eight iron columns. Three entry portals lead to the salon, above which are a space for women, and four staircases to the gallery. In temperate decorative feel the impact of folk art and the East. However, more than anything, this religious building exudates with spirit of reconciliation and tolerance. Subotica from which I write, of my reality and dream, in his memory has the wisdom and winds. And beauty.

keszeg

It must be one of the nicest synagogue in Europa. Unfortunatelly in very bad situation. You can see it (very speciel hungarian jugendstil), but nobody use it.

Lanamarie83

Every time I walk past the Synagogue, I feel so sad. This is an amazing piece of Hungarian architecture, but unfortunately it is in ruins and is not open to the public. Just recently some renovations have begun on the exterior, but it is still not open to the public. I hope that the renovations are competed soon and the Synagogue is used once again.

Regentag

This synagogue is a remarkable masterpiece of the Hungarian Art Nouveau in Subotica-Szabadka, Serbia. Unfortunately its condition is really worrying, it is listed amongst the ten most endangered synagogues of the world, but there are more and more efforts made to restore it. Its fate parallels that of the jewry of Subotica, a once flourishing community now sadly dwindled and fading away.A must see, because even in its ruins it's an unforgettable experience.

AnaNBelgrade

Defenitely bigger and more beautiful than one in Budapest and Belgrade! It is a ruin now because no one wants to invest. You can sneak in the jard, eaven in the building if u r extra avanturistic. Misterious and beautiful, sad and glorious at the same time.
