A monastery that started as a cave church and was expanded through the centuries. Well worth a visit.

Monastery lies on the hill right in the center of Ayia Napa town. It was built in 1400 AD as a fortified castle and is encsircled by high walls. Name Napa means woody valley, and name of monastery and a village coming from the "Icon of Virgin Mary of Napes", which means "the Saint of the woods". There were a Roman chapel and a women's Monastery and a Roman chapel (the right aisle of the church) built. In front of entrance, next to reservoir, stands the enormous sycamore tree Ficus Sykamorus. According to a legend, it is said to have been planted by the Venetian woman. The Ayia Napas Aqueduct delivered water to the Monastery from mountains nearby. On the northern side of the Monastery´s courtyard, there is a fountain in a shape of the head of a wild boar. Above that, the two-floor building is standing, in which there were a living quarters of a high official once in time.Up on the hill, on the west side of the church, there is a small, ancient church, where according to tradition, the Virgin Mary lay down for a while to rest.Nearby the monastery, the new church is built in 1990, also dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the church has a number of bright well-done mosaics indoors and even outdoors, around the church´s square.(see pictures attached). In a time of our visit the Monastery was a stage for Medieval week celebrations, whence medieval decorations on the grounds.

Can be found in the centre of Ayia napa . Beautiful surrounding gardens , many bride and grooms have had their photos taken here. Close to restaurants ,bars and shops.

The monastery is set in its own grounds and seems so out of character with its surroundings. Its a beautiful building with the alter set below ground level and tenderly maintained. Its also free to enter (donations accepted) and well worth a visit if in the area.

incredible...a place of peace and silence in the middle of pulsing nightlife and funparks...we loved the most the cave-like church andd the fountain in the front of it. also the tree in front of the main entrance is impressive.

A lovely little piece of history and tranquility. Very central but so peaceful. Nice arched cloisters and pretty garden to step back in time in. Really picturesque so good for photos.

It was lovely to look round and there were some priests singing whilst we were there which was rather nice. Beautifully kept and no litter

Very quite and peaceful place to visit, just behind the Ayia Napa Square bus stop. Old structures and walls shows it age. The beautiful Church of the Holy Virgin mother of God is just adjacent to it.

Steeped in history a must see. We visited on a Saturday night when the traditional singers and dancers where performing. Lost of trinkets/memorabilia to buy.

It is quite amazing that this little area of peace and tranquility resides in the centre of Ayia Napa, cheek by jowl with busy shops, bars and restaurants. The monastery was built in 1500 after an icon of the Virgin Mary was found in a cave there. It has been extended and added to over the centuries but the cave area is now a small church/ chapel and there is a well and gardens surrounded by walls and rooms one of which houses a small shop. It is a very restful place and a delight to visit. Just nearby is the church of Panagia, another name for Mary. With its typical Greek painted walls and ceilings detailing the saints and the collection of icons it seems overwhelming to the eye. Both buildings are a joy to visit.

Ruins to see, can go in, shoulders must be covered ladies, no guide or entrance fee, if UK would be both, very old, look up history before you go or go with walking guide from hotel. next to modern church which is quite impressive
