situated in a small orthodox church close to the harbour, the Kyrenia Icon museum, has a fairly nice selection of icons and a lovely icon-screen. Sadly very little info available on the exhibited icons.
Very informative museum in a lovely setting. A fabulous day. Can't wait to visit again to catch all the things we couldn't get round to.
Beautiful iconostasis. Icons of variable ages, some quite modern. Very quiet and very cheap. Pleasantly cool. Wont take long to visit-30 mins max I reckon.
Firstly - it wasn't easy to find; we stumbled upon the museum by chance. The outside of the building is simple, but the interior is a really lovely design. The icons are very varied and it is interesting to see the way that art has developed over the ages.
Lucky to visit this with a guide who could point out some of the more amazing icons, tell little stories about them or just details about construction, the difference between Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic icons etc. Don't forget to also visit Kykkos Monastery and St Nicholas of the Roof Church in the Troodos Mountains.
Situated behind the British Hotel is this little gem, the church itself is quite a surprise with its unusual interior layout. The Icons are not disappointing either. A small charge is due but no one seemed too bothered to collect it on the day we visited.
I went there first over 20 years ago and couldn't believe such treasures were in an unlocked and unguarded place, the icons were worth the visit although I have not been to the newer building, perhaps next time. I couldn't put the correct date of my visit , the drop down dates didn't supply it.
Although the icons are not particularly old, they are stunning depictions of saints. The museum is not difficult to get to and although flash photography is forbidden, I was able to take some reasonable photos without. Icons are labelled and dated in English.
It was a breathtaking experience. The Alter Art was unbelievable. The level of detail was amazing. We spent hours looking at messages within the artwork. It truly made sense why they used artwork to tell the Gospels, Old and New Testaments. I am no longer able to say "idols and images should not be inside a church" this was evangelical outreach to the poor and illiterate of that time. Wonderful - So glad we kept returning for the last 5 years. Very erratic opening times.
kyrenia is different place. othantic. lovely. historical. ottoman place. and mixed culutres in 1200 - 1800 years. wonderfull. all artciles is showing this
The converted church was an interesting building, but the Icons were all of a poor standard, mostly 19th Century and not worth the visit.
Appeared to have been closed for quite some time. Maybe I should have tried to enter through the hotel next door? There was grafitti on the walls outside and the church was not maintained on the outside.
it was nice but try to visit Sundays and you do not have to pay a ticket for it
Not expensive, worth a look if you're passing, don't make a special journey unless you are interested in religious icons. Probably would not interest children or teenagers.
It was locked with no sign of when it opens! The building is an old church that apparently houses the collection. Best to head for the Djafer Pasha Mosque.
