We thought the shipwreck museum was separate to the Castle, so a pleasant surprise to find a two-for-one experience - the castle itself and the shipwreck!
One ticket covers the entrance to the Castle and the shipwreck museum which is not that big but it is of huge interest. The remains and exhibits from the ship date back to the 4th century BC and include the cargo and items relating to the daily lives of its sailors.
Interesting to see, there is one wreckage. ıt is interesting to see ancient people could make money out of such a small boat with 4 crew.
There is nothing much to see, bottom side of the boat and couple of amphoras. If it would be located somewhere outside the castle and i would have to travel to see it, i would be very disappointed.
Still on process museum but there are so many things to see. Old ships, their parts, pictures, stories and more...
The shipwreck museum lies inside the Kyrenia castle, on the right side of Kyrenia-harbour. In museum, which is nicely arranged and maintained, is possible to see the remains of an ancient greek merchant ship from 300 BC, named Kyrenia Ship, and artefacts found onboard of it. This is one of the oldest vessels ever recovered, was found in 1965 nearby the Kyrenia harbour. It was built of Aleppo-pine wood and was 14 m long, it is thought to be on its way from Samos via Kos and Rhodos to Cyprus when it sank.Museum is not very large but well-exhibited and maintained. Also as parallel is interesting to visit the Thalassa museum in Ayia Napa, where a full-size model of this ship, named Kyrenia II, can be seen. There is a quiet café in the open court of the castle, with outdoor seating in the shadow of large trees, serving warm meals and beverages. We preferred this place for our food-break, instead of the high-life and a lots of people in the restaurants of Kyrenia harbour. In the castle also WC is available.
Visited Kyrenia castle in October and was surprised to see it was the home of the Shipwreck museum. One ticket covers both. It was pretty interesting to see the boat sections filled with amphora's as well as the picture based re-enactment of the boats last voyage. It was all quite fascinating and gave me a window into the style of craft and trade that was used in that long ago roman period,
The shipwreck museum is found in kyrenia Castle interesting to see a over 2000 year old ship wreck with its cargo
Very well laid out displays of the ships contents, ship building and sailors lives then the actual ships itself in a sealed air conditioned room
Located within Kyrenia Castle this museum has a boat that has been brought up from the ocean after many years and the history is fully explained in detailed writings as you proceed through the museum. The original cargo holders are there with detail of how many there were on board and what they were holding. Proceeding up the stairs to an air conditioned and humidity controlled room you can look over the ship itself and clearly see how it was built.
A small but very well presented museum focussing upon one specific, ancient ship wreck. Don't miss it when visiting Kyrenia Castle.
Very interesting and somewhat of a hot spot experience take or drink plenty of water as the heat builds up inside the castle walls, but worth a vist.
Situated in the castle grounds this reminds me of the Mary Rose. It is housed in a temperature controlled room and is well worth a visit.
I'm really glad friends living in Girne told me about this and gave me stuff to read before I visited or I might have missed this. The Shipwreck museum is inside Girne/Kyrenia castle and included in your castle admission ticket. If you have been fascinated by the Mary Rose wreck in Portsmouth and it's preservation - well, this is much, much older, was raised years before the Mary Rose, and is beautifully preserved.
