Friends from the area took me to see the castle on a recent business trip to northern Cyprus. It was slightly cloudly as we began and the castle was an enjoyable attraction. The views as you climb are incredible - especially on the day we went when it clouded up and rained a little and a rainbow appeared. The low clouds shrouded the tops of the nearby mountains and it was quite scenic. The history was interesting and the trip was well worth the exercise. If you are out of shape, you need to allow plenty of time as there are many steps. Also, if you go during the summer, take some water.
A fairy castle, all be it ruins. The climb is steep so take plenty of breaks a and water with you but worth it. Fabulous views over Kyrenia so take a camera.
Was amazing views, truly breathtaking! The walk to the top and the steep steps are also breathtaking but so worth it when you reach the top
St. Hilarion, thought to be the inspiration for the Disney Castle, but thankfully without the hoards or music. the best time to go is the morning or in time for the sunset, been there a few times now and you will always find another corner of this incredible historical site.
A big climb up the steps for the fit. One of 3 castles that stretch along the north 5 finger mountain range in the north of Turkish Cyprus.
Don't miss it ! Short drive from Kyrenia and very reasonable entrance fee. Be prepared for lots of steps but the whole experience is fantastic.
This castle is on top of the mountain where you could see our hotel and you can see the castle at night time when the light are on fantastic view
The drive to the castle from Kyrenia (built by Byzantines and Crusaders) is about 25 minutes and if you get here by taxi the fare is something like 100 TL. St. Hilarion is located western of the Kyrenia Mountain range. If you plan to visit the caste in summer preferably come early. The climb to the top is 730 metres and can be quite tiring if you are not fit. Be sure to have along flat shoes, a bottle of water, perhaps a walking stick and by all means a camera.I believe it is a “must see attraction”. The view from out there is breathtaking. There is a coffee shop by the parking.
If you visit Kyrenia, St Hilarion Castle is a must: spectacular situation and spectacular views. The highlight of our week!
The castle naturally is placed on a very steep hill and therefore does involve steps - lots & lots of them but if you can make it to the top the views are stunning and the ruins themselves are a delight to behold and well worth the visit.
St Hilarion Castle is a short drive from Kyrenia or coach tours visit regularly. To reach the higher castle areas you will ascend 475 steps some of which are very steep therefore this is not for the unfit or faint hearted. Views from the top are spectacular looking over the coast and the town of Kyrenia. The entrance fee, as with every other place of interest in Northern Cyprus, is extremely reasonable.
The drive to the castle from Kyrenia was about 25 mins by taxi which cost 100TL, which was cheaper and a more personal experience then going with a tour guide. As we drove up the view was amazing! Once we got to the castle we paid full price for me and my kids went in as students because they had their ISU/NUS cards ( NUS/ISU cards are available for kids starting six form, college or a uni within the UK) International Student Union (ISU) cards can be purchased at an extra cost which can be used in different countries and is well worth it . There is a small coffee shop were we purchased hot chocolates really (nice people). Going up the castle is tiring to the most active as well as the least. You go up the castle via lots and lots of steps, you get to a historical information hall which has a seating area. This is were I stopped and the kids went on... Do be very careful when going up or coming down as the steps are not very safe and in wet weather become slippery. Overall, I didn't find it that great just climbing and climbing to see the view. Nothing like a castle in UK but somewhere to take the kids and they enjoyed it.
If its vews you want and a good work out to the top its a must only downside is the wc do not even go there
Don't miss it. History of Cyprus is wrapped up in this site. Lots of stairs and nooks and crannies. Views are gorgeous and you can see the enemy coming from a long way off
