Clean impeccable water.....locals friendly and great restaurantsCome during bike week......and experience the Harley feeling!,,
Great for swimming and relaxing on. Ideal for families as the private beach has lifeguard and a great sun area.
We stopped by the lake to enjoy the beautiful clear, warm water and were shocked to find out that there is not a single free access point to the lake. The entire area has been commercialized and you need to pay to access the lake. Parking is a disaster unless you are staying at the large camp ground. For us, the area was too commercialized and over-crowded.
Faak Am See.. What a picturesque lake.. crystal clear water and one can swim as much as one wants...We went to Faak via train from Villach.. there are frequent train connections going from Villach Hauptbahnhof (Main train station) till Faak am see.. these trains move in the direction of Rosenbach or Zirovenci (Slovenia) or Zagreb (Croatia).. .Its a 15 min ride from Villach by train...Faak am See is a small train station and the walk to the lake is only about 15 mins or so.. its about 3 euros for a one way ticket...Right opposite the train station however, there is a nice art of Harley Davidson bikes.. every year in the month of September.. these is a Harley Davidson Festival sort of in Faak where around 50,000 bikers from all across gather here...But when we went in early July.. there was hardly anyone and so it was wonderful to swim around the lake...One need not stay in one of the hotels around Faak to have a swim.. you can enter and pay the rent for swimming and thats about it...Some other activities include paddle boating.. wind sailing.. .Infact the lake water is so clean that one can gulp in water directly.. .Lake Faak is probably one of the smallest lakes in carinthia.. but a one day trip to this beautiful place is absolutely worth it..
The Faaker See is one of the smaller of a number of alpine (but not cold) lakes in the southern state of Carinthia. It is right next to the city of Villach and in comparison to the more famous Woerthersee or Ossiacher See smaller, but more family-friendly as it does not allow motor boats (only electric engines) on it. Hence it is very safe for all types of boats, air mattresses and swimmers in the lake. The whole tourism around the lake is directed towards families, so you will find many nice features like restaurants having outdoor playgrounds where the children can spend their time until the food arrives, plenty of things to rent on (boats, paddle boats, etc.) and around the lake (bikes). The larger beach areas are on the "Faak" and "Faak Strand" area, which are split about half between private beaches serving a few houses or streets, and large camping lots with a mix of Austrian, German and Dutch campers. The other two towns on the lake (Egg and Drobollach) have somewhat less beach access but also many private beaches owned by "pensiones" (like a B&B concept). Nearbye there is just about enough to do for a 2 week family vacation, there are several mountains to climb or cable-car up, including the imposing "Mittagskogel", a mountain like cut from a movie. Italy and Slovenia are right there within literally 15 min drive, although the border towns are somewhat dull especially in the summer and one would have to drive further into the countries to see meaningful sights.Overall a great place for an easy family vacation, just be aware that at the end of August a long-running motorbike festival (specifically for Harley-Davidson fans) transforms the family-friendly place into a mess of noise and motorbike parties, something pretty out of character for the place but surely a nice late-season buck to make
Its only cheap to get in, there are cheap big peddle boats with slides that can be peddled out as far as you want. there is a grassy area to sunbathe/pinic area, the lake water is really fresh, clean and quite warm. Bad side: there is no cafe or eating place there. and make sure to put on suncream. I LOVED IT AND WANTED TO GO BACK!
Around the lake many beach can be found, campig, bike/boat/kajak rental facilities. One great place is Egg am Faaker See.
Michele Gallo
