A great collection of artefacts - the museum not too large which is great as some museums are just too much to take in
My friends and I visited Samos İsland last September. We lıke Samos but the museum was something else. The Archeological museum has a large collection of ancient artifacts. This was a wonderful.
Many nice pics and the important great statue are worth to see. There are two buildings. The buildings have a history which you can read it at the museum. One of them is full of statues and the other is full of ancient things from the civilizations lived in Samos.
So many things inside of this museum, everything from big sculptures to little figurines to pretty vases and amphoras. You will not be disappointed if you are interested in the archaic period, or items from Egypt, Cyprus and Persia. Definitely worth a visit. There is a beautiful park just outside where you can enjoy a coffee or just sit on a bench and relax.
Don't bother to go to the Temple of Hero. All the excavated artifacts and statues are at Samos Town museum. Worth a visit for the Kouros.
This is a small museum. The 4.75 meter sculpture (kouros) was amazing and there were some interesting small pieces. Recommended to history lovers but visiting is not a must to people who have limited time.
The musuem is excellent to walk through and explore the history of Samos. The 5m tall Kouros of Samos is a landmark and its view will bring you pictures of the glorious times of the island.
We made a special trip into Samos town to see the museum. Found parking easily enough nearby. Museum in two separate buildings next to each other, in same complex where the a Town Hall is. Good pieces excavated from the Ireon Sanctuary near Pythagorio. Worth going just to see the giant koures. First building houses large pieces mainly. Second building is restored mansion. Large statues in foyer, double curving staircase to upper level, containing smaller artifacts. Very interesting collection of bronzes, pottery.
This is not to be missed. Good museum. Good value. Well presented artefacts. Generally what you would expect with one exception. The Kouros! It is huge, and magnificent despite its somewhat chequered history.
Visit heroion and this museum to give you a understanding of settlement back to 8th cent BC. Very well presented relics especially the gryphons
Archaeological museums on the islands are always a bit hit and miss but the archaeological museum (in two buildings) in Samos Town is pretty good. Pride of place is the gigantic kouros around which the new museum building appears to have been built. I have seen very many kouri in Greek museums and never knew they came this big. The museum attendant very kindly stood next to it for me so I could get a photo that showed the scale of the beastie. Worth the visit for this exhibit alone.
The museum is facinating with recent finds from archeological sites in samos. Everything is excellently presented and explained.
Definitely worth a visit as gives you a good insight into the history of the island. The colossal kouros was quite awe inspiring. The displays of votives ( gifts left at the Temple of Hero) were overwhelming but information boards explained the background well. It was good to follow up this visit with a trip to the Temple on the coast by Ireon. Remember all museums and archaeological sites are closed on Mondays.
The museum has a large collection of ancient artifacts from different points of Samos and I think everyone should go.
Archeological museums can be really boring, but this one is really worth your time. Beautiful statues and nice displays. We loved the kouros, especially because we visited a kouros on Naxos that was never finished and left in the marble quarry. Now we got to see what a finished opexample looks like.
