This magnificent beach is actually consisted of three beaches. The first one is gathering the bigger crowd, but if you want some privacy or a more wilder landscape then you should follow the stone path that leads to the second beach and if you can walk a little further the third part is more isolated (except August). Beautiful landscape, crystal clear water, recommended! Parking facilities are a bit of a problem though.
I had heard a lot about this beach and it lived up to everything I had heard. It has good sized black stones that are thought to have originated from volcanic activity; the stones are unique to this area of Chios only. It was a beautiful setting with the bluff on both sides. If you walk a bit further down the path there is another more secluded beach. The locals told me there is another one afterwards but you have to wade to that one.
This wonderful beach is close to medieval village Pyrgi. You can go there by car and is easily accessible. The most impressive thing is the colour of the pebbles-black-because of an old volcano. The sea is crystal clear. You have to take an umbrella with you to have some shade. There are traditional tavernas nearby to taste delicious food at reasonable prices. The only disadvantage is that in summer is a little difficult to find parking space.
nothing to say about the beach. You simply have to go no matter what. Probably the best beach i've ever been to.
the black stones created an amazing atmosphere in the beach and the sea is also so nice, very clean, not cold not warm....also the sepia colored rocks behind the beach were perfectly fit the whole ambiance! ...spectacular to spend time, and swim there! ...I could fo to Chios island just to see Mavra Volia beach!
This beach is highly overrated. We went there black pebbles were all around and the sea was great but it is hard to go there.
This place has two beaches and we visited the more isolated one which required some 10 minute walking. The waters are amazingly clean (we visited it with northern winds blowing). There is a beach bar in the first beach if you would like to get a coffee or refreshment. The only problem we faced was the car parking. Drivers park on both sides of the road and there was a lot of confusion and frustation. We suggest that you park your car at the nearby village and walk.
The cliffs lining this beach are a golden stone, but the pebbles on the beach (it is an entirely pebble beach) are black. The explanation is that the pebbles are from a volcanic eruption out to sea, and not from the cliffs above. Wear water shoes if you have sensitive feet, but it is a lovely beach that gets deep very quickly.
Excellent clear water, no beach facility but it doesnt disturb thinking of nature and beauty of the bay, a must seen in chios. Parking facility nearby right after emporio bay
If swimming in clear blue water like in an aquarium gets you excited this is the place to go. You can see the ground way out into the bay. Be aware it's a natural beach with no amenities except a small taverna.
Volcano made beach with black stones create an unique view! Mavra Volia beach is accessible by another beach named Mavros Gialos.
This would have to be one of the best beaches in the world and we have travel a fair bit ,Crystal clear water and the beach is lined with amazing large black pebbles .This beach is quite amazing a must do on the island .
One of the best beaches in the island. The black stones have strong energy.Take with you un umbrella.
is also one of the most peculiar ones. Either you re going to love it or hate it. There is no between! You should bare in mind that the sun sets rather quickly there, so don t visit late in the afternnon!
Mavra Volia is one of a series of at least 3 consecutive beaches in the southern part of Chios, next to a small fishing village, Emporios. It takes you between 40 and 50 minutes from the city of Chios to get there; the roads are pretty good. Mavra Volia has a small parking lot, but during peak tourist season it is a big mistake trying to reach that lot. It is much easier to park at the entrance of Emporios and then walk to the beach, something like a quarter mile walk, albeit uphill towards the end. All beaches are covered by relatively large black volcanic pebbles from a nearby inactive volcano. The water is dark blue, absolutely clean, crystal clear and fresh. Rejuvenation is what you feel when you swim there. If you want calm waters, visit when the wind blows from the north; in south weather, you'll get waves. Each beach is about 300-400 feet long; the first beach is also wide and beautiful, but most of the times quite crowded; we lay there only after 6PM, when there is still some sun and fewer people. The second, third and fourth beaches are the big bonus! A trail from the the first beach, no longer than 400 feet, takes you there. The incredible beauty of these beaches is that they are pretty narrow and towered by brown/reddish majestic 300 feet high rocks. The colors create striking contrasts and the feel of isolation is prominent. These beaches are also less crowded and, by 5PM, the sun sets behind the rocks and people start leaving. That's when you should try to stay and experience the oneness of the sea, the beach and the rocks.
