The Akronayplia (in Turkish. Itch Kale) is a rocky promontory which formed the ancient citadel of Nafplio. Located opposite Bourdji and right of Nafplion on entering the inlet of the Argolid Gulf. It is accessible only from the north by an artificial historical ravine called the Arvanitia. The peninsula has an average height of the sea surface 45 m., Maximum length from east to west 900 m. And a width of about 400 m. Some parts of the walls are cyclopean Acronauplia which formed the basis of later fortifications, which portions are saved until today.

The site was a let down after exploring Palamidi and Bourtzi. It was all locked up and closed so it was hard to get a good view of what it had been. There was a lot of garbage and kids parked up there looking like they were up to no good. Sad

We walked to the top of the fortress in the morning before the sun was shining on the steps, making for an easy trek even though we are both in our sixties and my wife sports an artificial knee. There is a parking lot at the top for those that prefer a taxi or have a car. There is a bathroom near the top, and a vendor kiosk in the parking lot if needed. The pay station is also located near the top. The climb is worth it for the views alone. We brought a small backpack with water and snacks and just sat against the inner walls to relax and eat.

During our visit in Nafplion we walk around every where in this town. History is around you. Acronafplia was Nafplion first Venetian Fort. The tallest fort is for sure Palamidi Castle. But. Acronafplia is just above the ceramic tiles roofs of the town houses. The view is so relaxing and the wind is so cool there. There are many gates nad sybols of the venetian buikders like the lion of Venice. At the end of the walk you can reach Nafplia Palace Hotel where you can have an excellent coffee in silverware but with an amazing view to the sea just in front of you in such a height where you feel of being in the sky.

Very nice fortress on a very small island, minutes away from Nafplio harbor. Build by Venetians to protect the city in the 15th century, the fortress also served as a prison in the 19th century and hotel in the 20th century. Now it is just a tourist attraction, but it has no info about its past. If you want to find out something about it, just Google it (it applies to almost all attractions in Grrece). No fee, just the boat to get there.

Millenia ago (back in the bronze era) the city of Nafplion was surrounded by walls. Part of the ancient walls still exist but now what you can visit is the Venetian fortress which is well preserved, the tower clock, an old church etc. A walk up there and you will be rewarded by the lovely view of Arvanitia, the five canons, Bourdji fortress, the Argolic gulf and the city of Nafplion. There are millions of prickly pear trees up there, particularly pretty with their yellow flowers during Fall. There is no fee for visiting Acronafplia.

When you arrive there, you seem to enter the set of Lord of the rings or another fantasy film. (Tree of Gondor, anyone?) So great for a nice view on the city as well.Another plus point is to go at the end of the day when the sun is slowely setting so you get beautiful natural lighting for fun pictures!

When you arrive to Napflio, a ver nice city in the Peloponnesus, you cannot miss this huge fortress built on the mountain adjacent to the city. This fortress has been a key defence assets for the protection of the port and of the city from the enemies during several centuries, as its solid walls and independent bastions can demonstrate. it is definitively worth a visit, also to admire the outstanding view. Suggestion: a refreshment point serving some fresh drinks and snacks would alleviate the visitors especially during sunny and hot days in summer.

Venician fortress looms over Nafpoli. It is not classical Greece, but it is very cool. The 999 steps will probably make you sore, but who cares? Go jump in the Aegean afterward!

I've been in Nafplio several times, each and every I visit Acronafplia because it's simply amazing. You can have breathtaking beautiful views from the top for whole old town of Nafplio as well as feel some archeologic climate :)For me the best view is from Clock Tower where you can take amazing pics!Enjoy your time there...All for free!

You can actually walk here by going from the main square and winding your way up through all the stairs to the top. Or, conversely, walk back down. Not too much left of a fortress, though. We saw the remains of a rest stop restaurant, but it was. Closed. So, no water, no services. Long walk. Be forewarned.

and a fun way to see the town. The fort is fun, a good 20 minute visit is all that it is, but just right for our kids who were getting a bit tired of sightseeing!

The views of this fortress are breathtaking in any light. A photographer's dream backdrop or focal point.

You have to do it the hard way! Climb the steps from the bottom to get the real feel of the place. The fortress itself goes on and on, bastion after bastion. There's lots to see and you get a real feel of history.

Breathtaking view of mbourtzi, the sea, mountains and the city. You MUST visit it just before sun-down. It takes about 30 minutes to walk all the way, it's just a walk. I took amazing photos, and the scenery calmed me!
