This small church houses an astounding array of relics of saints; items belonging to former bishops; icons dating several centuries back; and a number of art works and artifacts related to the Greek Revolution (in which Nafpio played a prominent role, as the site of the provisional government). There is an interesting painting, several meters long, in the front of the church, apparently made by a metropolitan (a bishop). It depicts Greeks of different ages, from classical times, to medieval times, through the Ottoman era, the revolution, the German occupation, and the present. (Photographing it proved impossible because of the sun's glare). There is also a monument directly next to the church, at the site upon which St. Anastasios the Nafplian was martyred in 1655.
I've never been inside a Greek Orthodox church before and this was quite an eye opener. Interesting to see how GO churches are laid out and the decorative nature of their ceilings and walls. Incredibly chandeliers!
The church existed before the Venetian rule (16th century) and is one of the most important orthodox churches of Nafplion as many great historical events took place here. Many funerals of heroes of the Greek revolution took place here as well as that of the first Governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias. The first King of Greece, Otto would visit the church on Sundays and go to the liturgy. His throne is still in the church. The Venetian influence is obvious in the iconography of the church.
This is the main church of Nafplio where all important celebrations are taking place each year. It's very historical and surely worth of visit. You can sit on the bench on the square and have a lot time for looking. Still many shops and public places are ruined in Nafplio.
Try to pickup a wedding ceremony in and arround this church.Like every othodox church, this churc is devoted to the holy Georg. The painting, devotion is very imprssive.
This is the main church of the town and boasts a copy of the Last Supper on the ceiling towards the front. Well worth a visit.

Enter the church and move to another timen another era: the church is a mystical cave, filled with incense, candles and strange ex voto. You may see the lady in charge, a dark vision of a old crippled guardian of this temple.
A church with a beautiful interior, it feels as if you can relax and be safe while meditating on important issues. The atmosphere is of quiet dignity and service to the Highest Authority. Please visit when you get the chance
We were lucky to see this church in the late evening. The ligth inside were only candles. So nice!
Take ten minutes of your day and look in this small church. The light through the windows is beautiful and the setting is serene.
