If you fancy a day away from the beach, take a trip to Lake Kournas.Hire a pedalo, have lunch at Marcos, chill out!
We rented a car from Chania and drove here! I recommend renting a pedal boat at the beach to see the goldfish and turtles that lives in the Lake! Don't forget to drive up the mountain and see the real village Kourna with nice pottery and olive oil!
Lovely lake, you can walk out for along way. well worth a visit. The pedalos are very reasonably priced and relaxing to go on out
I recommend, not to be missed. beautiful place. Parking wery easi Delicious food, good coffee. Great family tour.
very beautiful place, place with fantastic view, restaurants and cafe, for relax, with friens or family. Very beautiful lake, with ducks, ride pedalos!
This is a beautiful lake, great for paddling / swimming as long as you avoid the clayey bits! A lot of birdlife including Kingfishers that even use the Pedalos to spy fish from! A selection of reasonable Tavernas and free parking make this a nice place to spend a few hours.
Due to the time of year we visited Lake Kournas there were very few people, which was great for me as I went to see the birdlife. There was enough to keep me occupied for an hour or so as I walked along the edge of the Lake. The second time we visited there were people on the lake, the weather was not great but they looked as if they were having fun. I suspect in the peak season it is very busy.
Relax on or around the lake. Plenty of tavernas where u cad eat or have a drink while looking over the lake. Resonable priced
Lovely lake but sadly spoilt by tourism. (sunbeds, boat hire etc!) We swam a little but I got freaked out as the bottom of the lake is like quicksand. I wouldnt go majorly out of my way to visit this lake however it is worth a stop if you are in the area.
Upon arriving at Terra-Cotta pottery, we were asked 'English, German, French?' and assured Mr. Tsakalakis (?) that we could do all those languages. Our host then volunteered that it would be good if were neither English nor German 'because they just look and don't buy'. Unfazed by our reply that were both (one English/one German), he opined that this is a rare (unfortunate?) combination. We did not dare to reveal that it was the day of out 40th wedding anniversary ... He then continued to lecture us about pottery, olive oil, luggage allowances ('I have never had any problems waiting for my luggage at Heathrow.') and economics. He had not quite finished enlightening us when we took flight.Apparently. Mr. T. is in charge of glazing and only serves in the shop on weekends. So if you want to experience this master of tact, make sure you visit on a Saturday or Sunday. By the way, the ceramics were quite nice!
The mountains surrounding the lake created a stunning aspect. It was really lovely to have a browse around all the wonderful little nearby shops for mementos of Crete.
was windy the day we went, but still a beautiful place. We went by noddy train from the resort at a small cost of 4 euro each each way. Lots of shops and tavernas around the lake and pedalo's for hire, we spent time walking round the lake enjoying the scenery before enjoying a meal in one of the tavernas.
Beautiful Freshwater Lake in the midst of a mountain backdrop, you can sunbathe around the lake, there are sunbeds, or if you prefer, go swimming in the lake, hire a pedalo (it takes about an hour to get all around the lake) there are fish and terrapins in the deeper part of the lake, also plenty of wildlife i.e. ducks, birds , dabchicks, allsorts, well worth a visit, the lake is skirted by several tavernas, we ate in a place called Marco's Place, they have the most delicious home made yoghurt and raki with honey.
This was our first visit to Crete and as we took a rental car, we decided to go to Kournas lake.It has a very unique combination of mountain landscape, Greek climate and refreshing views. The lake itself is very interesting, it has a long shallow zone with ugly and stinky mudy and rocky (it is really hard to get to deep without hissing and hitting your legs with rocks) bottom, but than, when you finally get to the deep, there is a hell lot of a long and dark seaweed. A very dramatic change, as water gets darker, bottom gets deeper and you can finally swim as you like. The downside of this place are boat and catamaran sellers. It is hard to simply swim, because of boats, who are urge to hit you in the head. Also, with a lot of taverns, there is no such simple thing as a place to clean legs of lake mud. So, I was in sneakers (as I was driving a car) and I had to wash my legs with bottled water. The bright side - at the second entry there is a little souvenir shop, where you can buy home made by the shop keepers olive oil. You can have a taste of it before you buy it.In general, Kournas lake is a beautiful place, poisoned by modern infrastructure. But you have to visit it!
This lake is something unreal. It is one of the most beautiful places in Crete. We arrived here by car and took a catamaran for an hour (costs 7 euro for two people). I am very glad that came to see it. Recommend it to every person who wants to see nature beauty.
