The drive from Chania was on the long side, but easy to get to in about an hour on main roads; the drive was totally worth it, since Falassarna is a gorgeous beach. The views driving down are great - you can see just how expansive the beach is. The parking is plentiful, there are restrooms and showers next to a restaurant/bar set back off the beach so the amenities make it really convenient to spend the day beach-side. Music from the bar was just loud enough to hear from the beach chairs and added to the ambiance. Since the beach faces West, this is a perfect beach to watch the sunset - there are no obstructions and with just a few wispy clouds it was a gorgeous show.
If you stay in Agia marina like we did, this beach is much closer then Elafonissi and not as crowded. Good for watersports but if you have small children remember it can get pretty windy here. Nice kittel restaurant nearby beach. Easy to park at parking lot, then just a few minutes to walk to the beach.
One of the best White Sandy beaches in Crete, spread over several hundred metres there is something there for everybody. If you just want to relax and sunbathe with a safe dip in the sea then you'll find it here. If you want to snorkel around rocks, you can find this too and if you tire of the seemly endless white sandy beaches you can walk to the ancient port of Falasarna where they have discovered ruins . The land rose several metres after an earthquake nearly 2000 years ago and the port is now high and dry inland by some 50 plus metres, totally fascinating to visit. Excellent day about an hours drive from Chania. There are buses here too!
Falassarna Beach is heaven on earth...pristine water, golden sand (not too fine that it sticks to everything and gets into every cranny!). When you visit the west side of Crete, you have to visit this beach. It is one of the few beaches that are not totally over crowded with Umbrellas and lounges and people trying to sell you stuff...the best thing to do is pack a picnic....lots of water and your hat and find a quiet cove, spread out your towel and enjoy some real R&R. This coast will also provide one of the most spectacular sunsets on the planet...Crete is one of the dew places on earth where the sunsets truly rival those of the much written and photographed Santorini, and Falassarna Beach is a great spot for such a glorious view...not to mention that sunset is one of the best times to enjoy this beach...the crowds leave and the lovers remain! When walking back up the Cliffside, make a pit stop for a refreshing drink or two, or three....at Orange Blue Bar...great place to drink, dance and meet other travellers and locals.
Very nice beach and nice area around. And a nice drive to get there. Not so crowded in september, god to go by car instead of tourist bus
very nice and big beach. very clear waters but very deep not suitable for small children .there's a restaurant on site so you can spend the whole there
The smaller beach to the north of the village is beautiful, partly separated from the crystal clear, warm sea by a fascinating row of sea worn rock. The sand is soft, slightly pink, and extends far from the shore under the waves - a long walk out to get to swimming depth, so good for children I guess. Beware of a few well camouflaged rocks just at sand level - there to trip and hurt you! A small cliff with a few trees at its base provides a pretty backdrop. There are lots of beach beds and umbrellas for hire, a taverna at the south end of the beach and another on top of the cliff. A mini market is handy by the car park and road above the south of the beach. The 'big beach' to the south doesn't look as appealing, though I imagine this smaller one gets very crowded in summer. We're not beach people but enjoyed a couple of hours here in the sun.The drive to and from the beach is beautiful - fabulous views and several tavernas en route.
With a gentle breeze and mixture of sun and clouds made a lovely beach afternoon on this quiet, but beautiful sandy beach, where rock pools, geological formations, Natura 2000 site for juniperus macrocarpa makes the place interesting if you are bored of swimming and sunbathing all day long. Make a stroll along the beach North from the central sandy part and you will find various floral and geological features (like breccia) along the coast. Since it was end of the season, a few visitor could disturb our wandering among the rocks.
A wonderful beach! Paradise and not far from Kolymbari where I stayed. Would definitely go there again.
I believe it is one of the top 3 beaches of the island you MUST visit, no matter what!To my eyes, it is number one! Watch out if it is a windy day... better come another day!
We spent a month on the beaches of Greece and for the most part they are all beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. You can find clubs, bars, restaurants, umbrellas, beautiful bodies, and more... but waves are scarce. We found them here as well as all of the above. It was beautiful childlike fun!! Enjoy.
Can be windy with wonderful waves but on a settled day the sea is wonderful for swimming, warm and so clear. Long beach so plenty of room to find a spot pefect for you, Be careful as there are some rocks in the sea but the water is so clear that on a settled day you can see them.
A nice, beautiful beach, not crowded, close to Kissamos. The waters are so nice, clear, and with a tyrcoise colour! The road to go there is not so difficult -you don't have to cross the mountains, so its easier than the other famous and so overcrowded beaches. There are all the facilities here. The only "negative" is that it is affected by the winds- especially by the West and Northwest , which unfortunately are very common for the area... So the majority of the days there are waves- but never mind if you like to play with them a little!!
Falassarna is probably the best beach of the West coast, far ahead of the overrated, overcrowded, Balos & Elafonisi. If you go to the beach after Big Beach (just below Galasia Thea), you'll find a perfect spot, not too big, quiet, with umbrellas and chairs, changing rooms, a shower and a small snack bar. The beach is perfectly clean, the water is turquoise, crystal clear and bonus, there are waves. Can't ask for anything more!
Large, sandy beach. Warm, clear, shallow waters. However, there are quite large waves, so probably not great for children. Only two tavernas, of which we visited the one further down the beach. The fish was fresh and pretty good. Much preferred to Elafonissi!
