I was a little nervous about attempting this hike while on our cruise, but we started out as soon as we could catch the tender to Fira. (Like just a little after 7 a.m.) We were there in November and it was brisk to start the day but the perfect temperature to start our 6 mile trek. I had on a light pullover and peeled it off a few hours later when the sun was higher up.It was a bit tricky finding the "path", because there really isn't a path or signs guiding you to where to start. Basically when we came out of the tram we took a left towards the water and followed the path along the cliff/between the buildings and just kept on going. A couple of times we had to figure out where to pick it back up again when it led to buildings or parking lots, but it wasn't hard to figure it out. There was nothing open when we were hiking it. Most things had already closed for winter season. Thank goodness we had water on us. We had to hold it until Oia for a bathroom too. But as far as the views? Incomparable. I was worried I couldn't do this, but it only got moderately challenging near the end, almost to Oia. Steeper grades and some loose rocky volcanic rocks to look out for. And wear good shoes. I had on tennis shoes but the trail was jagged rocks in some places and my soles weren't thick enough to pad me from the pokes entirely. I was happy to hitch a cab ride back to Fira. I couldn't have done it round trip, but I'm really psyched I did the 10 km Fira-Oia!
This hike was the highlight of our trip to Santorini. Walking from Fira to Oia, and back again, was challenging, but definitely worth the stunning views. It was also a great way to see the island. We went in February, so it wasn't too hot. If you visit in the summer, bring a lot of water with you because there isn't a lot between Fira and Oia. It takes anywhere from 2-3 hours depending on how fast you walk.
Visit to Ancinet thira is an amazing experience. It a long round roads starting from Kamari Beach and it takes time to go to the top.Once you reach to the top, you need to park the ticket and need to do a hike to the top. The view from top is amazing. You can see beautiful Aagean sea and also see the flight landing at the airport. It is like time a time travel into the history.Only point is that the place is secluded so be careful about though the place is very safe. If really like to explore the historical place and like hikes, dont miss this place.
The view on this hike is amazing. It is a long walk but it is a nice walk. Bring alot of water because you walk in the sun most of the time. There is a coffee shop on the way but it is exspensive and there is a little shop in the middel of nowhere where you can have some fresh juice. I walked this trail two times and I will walk it again but next time I will bring 3 L of water :-) remember good shoes :-)
Santorini is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. It is one of those places you must know in your life. The sunset is particularly beautiful.
I made the trek from Fira to Oia this past August. It is about ten miles and took me around three hours, stopping for pictures almost every second. I made the trek alone and felt completely safe in doing so. I only saw five people along the way, as this journey is pretty difficult terrain in some places. The path is relatively well traveled, but I met two people who were lost and walked down a hill that did not lead to anything, but that is part of the adventure. The views are simply stunning, there is not another place on earth like this. If you go in August, I recommend leaving Fira around 7:30 am, it was very hot by 10:30 when I made it to Oia. You have to walk a ways through Oia to find the bus stop, but the bus comes rather frequently and I only had to wait about 20 minutes. The bus is very inexpensive, less than 5 euros if I remember correctly, well worth it after such a long hike. I would travel to the other side of the world again just for this hike alone. It is incredible.
Santorin is one of these places you have to been before life has ended. This beautiful greek Island invites for relaxing, sunbathing, hiking and living.Once in a lifetime!
Just wear sports shoes!Take a small bottle of water as the distance to walk takes more than a couple of hours.
We are in our 60's and hiked with our adult daughter. It was beautiful and exciting. Took a taxi back to Fira.
