On the 28th of July 1979 the Goulandris Foundation inaugurated this eclectic Museum of Contemporary Art in Chora, the capital of Andros and birthplace of ship owner Basil P. Goulandris and since then the two buildings have hosted a lot of temporary collections as Tolouse Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, George Braque, Miro, Henri Moore, Giorgio De Chirico, Vassili Kandinsky, Paul Klee and many other artists. We have travelled expressly from Milan to see them though the years. In the Old Wing of the Museum houses we admired the entire collection of the Andros native sculptor Michalis Tombros, as well as part of the Foundation’s permanent collection, which includes works by some of the most important representatives of contemporary sculpture Electros, Giannis Gaitis, Giorgos Georgiadis, Kostas Dikefalos, Giorgos Zoggolopoulos, Demetris Kalamaras, Marina Karella. Kostas Koulentianos, Giorgos Lambrou, Natalia Mela, Giorgos Nikolaidis, Giannis Parmakelis, Giannis Pappas, Nafsika Pastra, Gerasimos Sklavos, Marianna Strapatsaki, Takis, Chryssa and actually Sophia Vari. In the New Wing, opposite the Old on the other side of the pedestrian road and with the same ticket, you can see the current exposition. Both of them are really interesting and very well presented. You cannot say to have seen Andros without visiting the Goulandris Museum!
www.moca-andros.gr for more info. There a 2 buildings, on either side of the road.In one building there was a 3 floor exhibition of Sophia Vari's works. Sculptures, sculptured jewellery and watercolour artwork. The other building had sculptures from a variety of artists.
We were on vacation and decided to check out the Museum of Contemporary Art. Sophia Vari sculptures were featured, and it was a great exhibit.
This year, a Sophia Vari sculpture excibitions. Every year hosts a different excibition. Has even hosted Picasso. Always a cultural event.
Choose the sunniest spot of Chora, the most authentic picture showing a path from a greek island and you have already found the Museum! Just to see how a great greek sculptor (Michael Tombros) inspired some of his most memorable creations. Also an intresting exhibition of Sofia Vari, a world famous sculptor, only for this summer.Place of culture, place of western civilization, a very pleasant walk...this is our beloved Greece!
Pls don't miss this beautiful museum of Art !! Even if you are not an art lover...you will be amazed by this small "Art nest !!! " they always have interesting exhibitions. This year the museum presents the sculptures o the famous artist Mrs Sophia Vari!! It is so worth to stop by !!
I visit Andros almost very year and I always make sure I go to visit the museum. I loved Sofia Vari's exhibits especially the sculptures and jewellery! They seem to compliment the amazing building but also its identity within the infinite blue! With the same price visit the permanent exhibition just opposite!
Very nice museum in the charming old center of Hora, we discovered a wonderful exhibition of famous artist Sofia Vari, sculptures, paintings, and jewelry ("wearable sculptures"), stunning !
Interesting exhibits and well worth the visit. Need to check when the museum is open as they are only opening on certain days which could mean a wasted journey to Andros Town.
There is always a confusion about the open hours of the Museum. Even the local people, don`t seem to know about it
Every summer (June-September) the Goulandris Museum of the Modern Art hosts some very exciting exhibitions and worth going to Andros just for those. It also provides a short collection of excellent artworks from contemporary Greek artists.Location: Splendid. A beautiful Cycladic building 5 minute walk from the central square.Service: The staff is well-trained and very friendly.
Every year the Museum astonish us with its collections and artists brought to Greek and tourist eyes. Try always watching the video presentation provided in its inhouse "cinema". You'll understand and interpret so much, even if you don't know anything about art.
I agree with most reviews. It is a small, but very interesting, and well organized museum (actually two buildings, one with the permanent collection, and the other for temporary exhibitions). I liked the current exhibition, byzantine art to contemporary art. Try to visit the museum, during the organized (and free) tours.
Worth the visit if you make it to Andros this year. Afternoon summer hours are 6-8pm. The temporary exhibit this year is wonderful. The permanent collection is also interesting.
