Easy walk and nice view. A "must" for People that likes naturewalks and panoramic views. A nice break from the beaches and tavernas :-)
A good hike over rough terrain, wear good sneakers and carry water. Need a car to get to starting point. View from the top was fantastic.
We hiked with a group, taking the easy route to the summit (i.e. bypassing the cave). Our trip leader told us it was about a 1200' ascent over a mile or so, so it wasn't very steep. The hike started out with sunny skies but by the time we were 3/4 of the way to the top, it had gotten cloudy and very very windy. So windy, that my trekking poles were blown to one side. The trail is similar to others we have encountered on the islands, namely, rocky, with loose stones. In some places, there were slabs of marble. Very different from the hikes in North America. Half of our group had trekking poles while others did not and managed without difficulty. Because of the wind I would recommend wearing an outer layer which you would probably have to remove at the lower reaches because one does get very hot and sweaty. Bring plenty of water. The views from the summit are a worthy reward -- you can see the Aegean in the distance. Our round trip (descent to the monastery of Fotodotis) is about 3 hrs, spending about 20 min at the summit.
We hiked a relatively short distance to the source of the spring, which now has a stone "spout" to make it easier for locals and tourists to fill their water bottles. The view from parking area is gorgeous - an expansive view of green valleys and high mountains. There are additional trails, but we didn't go farther than the spring.
What a great trip !! The background of the mountains is something that is not easy to describe. Try to imagine mountains made up of marble and then add goats, sheep, cows and horses. Few buildings if any spoil these mountains. Then at a certain point there is a water spring Aria where you can take a sip of this fresh water while staying in the shade and admiring a panoramic view of the marble mountains.
What amazing views at the top! Also, don't miss signing the book that's left for hikers who reach the summit. A bit on the hike: A bit over a mile high. It isn't easy, depending on the route taken. There are approximately 3 routes that one can take, the easiest starting near the white church encountered when driving up the mountain. The 2 remaining routes are difficult, but offer a visit to the Zeus cave. Most climbers stop at this point. These 2 routes start at a 7/10 level of difficulty. The walk up for these 2 trails aren't paved - it involves some rock scrambling and climbing. Small mounds of rocks are placed strategically throughout the route, indicating the way (very helpful!!). Block out approximately 4 hours of your day to do this hike (taking into account getting there, stopping for breaks, taking pictures, potentially getting a little lost, the level of difficulty you prefer in choosing a hike etc). Sneakers, water and sunblock are a must. We then drove 20 minutes to Kastraki beach for a dip. Awesome day. AMAZING VIEWS!!
There are two trails to get to the top of Zas Mountain. If you are an avid hiker and in great shape then you can hike the steep, more difficult trail from Zeus's cave. If you have any medical conditions, bad knees, etc I would recommend hike the other. My wife and I saw a couple people turn back because they could not handle the trail from Zeus's cave.
We decided to take the less steep route up, by ignoring the first signposts to Zas spring and caves ,and heading towards Danakos ,where the start of the walk is clearly marked at the white chapel Aghia Marina, along that road . Although marked " high difficulty" it was not a difficult or scary walk at all . Mainly gently rising mule track , last half hour rubbly path along abroad gently rising ridge . Spectacular views across the Cyclades from this , its highest point . One and half hour up, same down . Lunch afterwards at charming Aperanthos Village " opposite " , with a view of your achievement ! We didnt need walking boots , ok in walking sandals or trainers
easy to go, 2 hours of easy path, with nice weather (almost always) you can see half of the aegean sea from the top, .........................................................
This is a beautiful hike. I wish we had started earlier in the day, we started from Agia Marina (follow the road for Danakos) in order to take the easier path, it was about 10:15am but already way too hot (mid of june). It took 1h to reach the top. There were lots of flies, apart from this, it was amazing, breathtaking views. We heard the other path, which starts right when you leave filoti is much more difficult. Take: a lot of water, hat, suncream. Even at the top, it was very hot, and there was no shade.
Climbing Zas mountain is well worth the effort. Most people follow the eastern route from Agia Marina, keeping to the well marked trails. It's an enjoyable ascent with great views from the top over the surrounding islands. We took the less popular route around the western side of the mountain, starting in Filoxi and passing the Cave of Zeus on the way, before descending to Agia Marina. This is steep, strenuous and demanding but well worth the effort. Dieter Graf's book, Walking on Naxos, proved an invaluable guide in our endeavours. And did I mention the views?!!
