The little old church inside is fascinating and steeped in history. The views over leros from the castle down are amazing
The castle is beautiful and a good exercise is to walk up to and down from the castle. The views are beautiful from the top. Be sure you take a look into the little museum in the castle. The docent is so interesting and makes the history come alive. If you have any interest in Icons, he is the man to listen to. After your walk down, you can stop in Panteli and enjoy an ice cream in in the square.
During off-season, the castle is (spoosed to be) open 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesays, Saturdays and Sundays. Yet, we drove all the way up on Wednesay at 3.30 p.m. and it was closed, with no explanations! Still, the panoramic views up and down made the ride worthwhile.
Simply stunning. Well worth the effort to get up and down. Spectacular views of the island and beyond.
If you can find the guide it's well worth listening to his story on the history of the castle & Leros Island. If you are walking up to the castle there is a nice cafe on the way up & it's worth stopping for some refreshments
The Castle, the Church, the museum with a excellent conservator giving a lot of historical détails... a wonderful destination. Don't miss it!
We made the mistake of walking up the path, instead of the more gradual road or getting a taxi. however, the views were wonderful and worth the exhaustion and heat stroke.
The church dedicated to the Virgin is very beautiful, don't miss to light a candle and visit the Gavrilia's tomb inside. The view to Alinda bay, Alinda village Panteli village is a dynamite !!
The VIEW of the whole island is awesome, even if its windy (like when we were up there) factor 50 if sunny and not windy!! Drive up or get a taxi unless you are a fitness freak and then you will still need the rest! TAKE WATER with you as no shop or spring only WC's if they are open.
The castle overlooks the entire island, the church and the museum are very interesting. Best time to go is after 19.00
Great view grat place and very beautiful island! We met great taxi-driver Stella!!!! She was our personal sity-guide!
The view from the castle is absolutely fantastic !! 360 degrees !!!You can clam the steps (365!) or by road .Inside the castle you will find the little church of Virgin Maria with a holly icon .You will do the perfect pictures !! Beautiful .
The castle dominates the view in this part of the island of Leros so it is a must to make the trip up and see the reverse angle. The view is spectacular.Every time I've visited the castle there are hardly any tourists so it is like having the place to yourself. Read up on the history on Wikipedia beforehand because there is no information available on site. There are metal stands that have been faded by the sun so there is nothing to read. Which is nice. You have only your imagination to play with. There is sometimes apparently a person charging a fee to see the castle, when the exhibitions are open inside the buildings, but I've never seen them - or the exhibitions. I have, however, wandered around the place.Walk up from Platanos or take a bike or scooter up the road from Pandeli.
The castle lies on a hill with a very nice view over much of Leros. The view itself is enough reason to visit, if you also enjoy taking pictures and looking at culture you will probably like this place. There are a couple of rooms filled with icons and religious art to look at, but we didn't discover much else.
The castle itself is more a fort than a castle I think. There are to small chapels which are nice enough if you like that sort of thing. Other than that you're not really allowed into the buildings. The view is spectacular though, and the buildings themselves are nice enough. I like old buildings, so this was definitely worth the trip for me.
