Less than 1 hour from the Acropolis and far from the traffic and the usual touristic paths, there is an oasis for wine lovers or simply curious people that want to have a taste of “real Greece”. As some friend of us knew that my wife and I are Italian, so very sensitive on wine “education”, they invited us to Domaine Kosta Lazaridis Oinotria Gi in Kapandriti to know our opinion. The first impression is a very well kept estate around 10000sq.m with a large parking space for visitors , a beautiful garden and pool with a lovely view on the hills and several elegant spaces for catering marriages, baptism or business events. I learned that this family run company has won more than 700 international awards and now exports quite all over the world producing excellent biologically cultivated wines. They are so fond in wine that they wanted to create a “temple” both for connoisseurs and for school children in order to help them to appreciate wine making and later wine tasting. Our guide was George, the young but expert oenologist very professional but meanwhile friendly, he was very patient answering to our questions always with a smile. He accompanied us in the incredible wine museum where we learned about history and mythology of the wine, we admired a huge collection of instruments and very curious showcases with corkscrew and caps, the beautiful cellars and the prive’ taste rooms. After our discovery tour we had the pleasure to taste several very interesting wines as the 2006 Syrah Agiorgitiko (limited edition) and spirits as the Methexis Cigar, a kind of delicate Greek Grappa distilled from Sauvignon Blanc created to be “married”to Cigars or bitter chocolate. We even tasted different types of “aceto botanico”, a Greek kind of the Italian aceto balsamico aged 1 to 8 years in very nice small bottles. As any guest coming to the Kosta Lazaridis Oinotria Gi, we had special prices so we bought some bottles, especially the ones that were only for export or in limited edition and tonight we will open one of them with some Italian and British and Greek friends. Don’t miss this experience if you are not just a “normal tourist”.The museum is open Monday to Friday 9.00-17.30 and during the weekends 11.00 -15.00.http://www.domaine-lazaridi.gr/en/homepagethe coordinates to get there are N38.23235 E23.86987, after ….you will be happier, so be careful driving home!
