it was very interesting and the view from the castle to the sea, beaches, olymp and mountains, surroundings was great!!!!
The castle of Platamonas is very well preserved, especially the main tower that still stands straight. The castle is actually not in the village of Platamonas but in that of Neos Panteleimonas, but it makes no difference. The entrance costs 2 euros and you can walk along the walls, see the remains of two byzantine churches and a big part of the coastal front of the region of Pieria. However, you cannot enter the tower itself as it is currently closed for the visitors.
It is unacceptable that this place is unsupported. The place is ancient, old and is related to Bulgarian history.
A few words on the location The Platamon Castle (Greek: το κάστρο του Πλαταμώνα) is a Crusader castle (built between 1204 and 1222) in northern Greece and is located southeast of Mount Olympus, in a strategic position which controls the exit of the Tempe valley, through which passes the main road connecting Macedonia with Thessaly and southern Greece. The tower (donjon), which overlooks the highway, is an imposing medieval fortress. But even if you do not care for History .. view is great .. short climb .. nice 30-60 min .. 2 euro per adult & kids are freeTo bad Tower was closed Not an attraction that i would make a special trip for .. but a great stop on the way
Loved it! Great historical place, and the view!!! Just amazing! My kids enjoyed exploring through the ancient castle, playing around the canons and climbing on the walls, though it is a bit high for them once they are up...
very cute, 2€ / person pass, if you climb the stairy you find cute panorama, the tower is closet for visit, on the rowd if you have luck will find cute turtles
When in the area, it's a must for history lovers or simply for lovers of castles. We visited last Sunday, the entrance is from the side of the highway. Entrance fees are paid inside the castle. Together with the tickets you receive a small brochure with basic information about the castle. There's a relatively understandable map on the brochure, but anyway you won't need it much as basically what's interesting are the walls, the churches (including remains of frescos!) and the donjon. Sadly, when we went there, the donjon was closed.Oh, there's also the option to buy a small book about the castle, I got one and it's quite informative. There are also a few types of postcards.Walking around takes no more than 1 hour, maybe even less.
The castle is situated on a high point overlooking the sea and town of Litochoro. Entrance is cheap but there are several tolls along the way. Much of the castle is in ruins or closed to the public but we had a breathtaking view of sunset. It was easy to reach by car, but I wouldn't have gone out of my way to see it using public transportation.
I knew it was ruined, but I really wanted to get into the tower. Unfortunately it was closed. Then went back to the bus stop where I waited about half an hour after the time what was written on a board at the stop. The bus didn't arrive so I walked.
We arrived at the time when the castle was closed, so we didn't get to go inside (but our friends who did go inside said it was lovely). However, we took quite a few nice pictures, we went around the castle and enjoyed the views from the hill over the sea and the mount Olympus.
Working hours are 08 till 20h on work days. The castle is actually just ruins!Excellent vantage point for photos.Bring cold water for the climb during summer time, cause it can get very hot.Short walk around the ruins. The only thing standing is the old church at the end of the tour.Small kids need to be watched at all times due to ruins and pits!
is very quiet place where u can have a nice walk and get beautiful views of the sea and mount Olimp too
when you are on the way to Athens is worth it to stop at Platamonas castle near the village of Platamonas south of Leptokarya and Katerini. The castle is on the top of the hill near the sea and offer a nice view around especially the sunset are awsome and you can spent nice family time there. Also you can find acceptable (price) lodging in Platamonas some of them right on the sea where the owners try hard to fulfill your expectations. Awsome beach and excellent food and drinks around.
There were only ruins (not whole castle), but worth to see it. Nice views. In fact, there are only a few stones and tower. Not very much to see.But the castle is situated on the top of a hill.
The castle of platamon is a Byzantine as well as Venetian influenced castle in Pieria in an amazing hill with great views of the mountain Olymbus and the sea! If you are in the area is really worth to visit it!
