the lake of kerkini ... i been there few years ago and i was just perfect, they have also boat tour, horse riding etc.. activities around the lake you dont get bored to be there but make sure you go in hot weather and right person :)
The Kerkini lake is truely forgotten. Most of its part is still unexploited and the villages around it are still underdeveloped. Here one can see how life used to be in Greek rural areas. Food is excellent and in reasonable prices. In certain places there are organized outdoor activities. We visited during the winter, with snow scattered around, a magnificent picture. Ideal for relaxing and meditation. It takes about 45min by car to drive around it.
In Kerkini lake visitors will come across to a spectacular view and will have the chance to explore the lake through a variety of activities. Bikes, horses, boats, canoes and even jeeps are some of them. Kerkini lake is very well known for being the home of many rare animal species, including birds, fish and mammals that you may meet when visiting according to the season. If you choose to spend some days in the Northern part of Greece do not omit to visit this magnificent place.
On spring, summer, autumn and winter Kerkini lake has always something to show. On spring there are the amazing flowers, on summer the incredible birds, on autumn the naked trees and on winter the snow-covered mountain-tops that surround the lake. A real paradise not too far from Thessaloniki and Serres. And don' t forget: it's for free!
I guess i could be wrong however I had gone in November, and there wasnt much to see there as most things around the lake were closed. However in Kerkini village we had buffallo meat for lunch as I was told it is the only place in GREECE that can grow it. I would like to see it in the summer months and probably would be impressed
Even though this is not the best time of the year to visit the lake, one can still enjoy its beauty and calmness. Activities in and around take place all year long. Spring time is more interesting bird-watching-wise as one could have more chances coming across more species. Same for the flora. The landscape is amazing at all times. For the ones interested in horseback riding, I strongly suggest to do arrange it at Ano Poroia village!! Avoid the one by the lake..
Peaceful . Able to walk close to the lake and birdwatch and take photographs without being disturbed by lots of people going past.
We spent a couple of days fishing. Plenty of fish to catch and very peaceful during the week. Apparently at weekends a lot of fishermen drive down from Bulgaria and Macedonia and it is quite busy.If you do actually get out of the car the scenery is beautiful, surrounded by mountains to the north and west of the lake. The western side is easier for walking as you can drive down to the lakeside and walk along the 'beach'. The eastern side is probably better for fishing but with steep banks and large rocks to climb over. The downside is the amount of rubbish people have left which was shameful. We stayed two nights. Most restaurants serve buffalo in one form or another and fish from the lake. We will certainly be returning.
Nothing to look at,no likes, it was just a lake that had not. Been cared for environmentally, so really no point in a visit, I drove the whole circuit, nothing to see
Perfect spot for outdoor activities such as horse riding, canoeing, etc. Perfect chance for relaxation at a scenery of magnificent beauty.
The lake was home to a large colony of Dalmatian Pelicans and masses of other water birds. Nightingales and warblers were plentiful around the edges and lots of butterflies in the flowery meadows. Take mosquito repellent just in case!
Amazing birding experience. Visited in November and observed 71 species of birds including flamingos, dalmatian pelican, and black stork. This location makes for an amazing Thracian nature adventure. We day tripped from Bulgaria, which means you need ID for the border crossing although you are in the EU the entire time. Do not miss this unique opportunity.
A great example of what can be achieved by a group of passionate enthusiasts. The lake has great access for bird watching. We will definitely be back in the spring.
Nature at its best. 1.20 minutes drive from Thessaloniki. Unique place in Europe. Thousand of water buffalos swimming in the crystal clear waters. Don't miss to taste buffalo meat and sweets made of buffalo milk
If you are in the region, visiting this place is a must. The scenery is very beautiful and if you visit it during dawn or dusk he colors are tremendous. You can see a lot of different endangered species of birds and animals. Apart from the scenery itself there are a few interesting activities around the lake. I specifically suggest horse riding or bicycling around the lake.
