The arc of Galerius or Kamara as is known to locals is one of the best preserved roman building in Thessaloniki.Build at the end of 3rd c A.D as part of the roman axis from the palace by the sea up to emperor's mausoleum (Rotonda).Today is also the main meeting place especially among young people.

The so-called Kamara, one of the most famous monuments of Thessaloniki, a meeting place for residents, but also visitors of the city, is located at the intersection of street Egnatias and Gunnar Dimitriou. It is a triumphal gate which was built at the turn of III to IV that is reminiscent of the glory of Kesar Gallery, one of the four master ogormne Roman Empire, and the rulers of the Balkan Peninsula, which is 299 decided to take up permanent residence in Thessaloniki and install this city as its capital.

I was bemused to see the Emperor's 4th-century kamara (arch) standing mere meters from a branch of the 21st century's emperor of caffeinated beverages. The arch is well preserved enough to imagine how resplendent it must have been as a gate leading up to the palace. I get the feeling that these days it's so much a part of the local scene that most people trotting off for their morning coffee probably don't even give the fact that it's a remarkable Roman relic a second thought. I certainly did, however. Savour it while sipping your Frappuccino!

Indeed almost into the traffic the arch is right there. Mostly in good repair, but sadly, not a lot of signage with history. For roads, it seems almost in the way and very busy with pedestrians. In other towns, this would be more of a celebrated site, but here it is just there, with little to no respect for the ancient history it has gone through.

I´ve visited several arches of imperators in the last years, and I have to say, I liked this one, even so I don´t like Galerius! the Arch is very large, ynd lots of the reliefs are in good shape. But it´s not in an all around good condition, as you see in the pictures. Also it´s standing kind of at a road crossing and is not very idyllic. But it´s aso in the very nice university quarter of the city, so you can have a walk and enjoy a coffee there!

I liked that view - ancient arch from the 4th century in the middle of the bustling, modern city. It's quite well preserved (although less than half of the original structure), so worth a bit of your time. Use a guidebook to get some more information as on-site we didn't find any plate about the history of the arch. In short it was built to emphasise the power of Galerius, the Roman emperor, and his victories. Nice view to the rotunda.

One thing that makes this more impressive to me was that it is just there. Right beside a main road in the city centre you walk under this great arch. Disappointed by the graffiti but there was a lot of graffiti on most major archeological sites in thessaloniki. It's easy to walk here from most parts of the city. You can go past it and visit it if you take the hop on hop off bus and if you visit the rotunda you will see.

You cannot say to have been in Thessaloniki without having been here! Simply amazing! You go around in the city centre and you cannot meet this amazing memory from the past many times during the day. It's also meeting point for all the young people before some going out.

Could be quite an attraction if only it was fully described and illuminated. What I knew about it was from a guide book and looking up the history. It is impressive and very "Roman" making a statement to everyone of the military might of Rome. It is worth a few minutes of time. The Rotunda is near by and is under reconstruction. You can probably visit both places in less than an hour.

This monument is over 1700 years old; the structure is almost in good shape ornamented nicely with sculptures depicting the unwritten history. The Arch that was connected to the Rotunda Church survived the earthquakes too; it is planned to be restored within a full project with the Rotunda Church.

Arch of Triumph of Roman Emperor Galerius... built in 4th century AD. I won't give it bellow 5 stars because it doesn't deserve it. The sculptures are really nice and give u a picture of how Romans viewed the World. But... on one of it's sides it was even painted by graffiti... the ministry of culture needs to take care of this arch at last... last cleaning was in the 90s...ps.. the Rotunda nearby is also worth a visit. It's really one of the most impressive Roman monuments and its well preserved.

So the Arch is another of these great photo opportunities in Thessaloniki, unfortunately provided without any relevant information. For example that it was an actual gateway at the beginning of the corridor leading to the Rotunda. Any information can only be found in your tour guides or other encyclopediae, because none is provided in the close vicinity. Which is unfortunate as it is quite an important historical monument.

Very nice imposing arch, that has been preserved from thousands of years ago. Worth a visit, but it has no info about Galerius or why was it built. I searched on Google to find that the arch was built in 298 to 299 AD and dedicated in 303 AD to celebrate the victory of roman emperor Galerius over the Sassanid Persians and capture of their capital Ctesiphon in 298, but it would have been nice to find that on the spot.
