The schwebebahn is a must see must do if you're in or around Wuppertal. It's unique, fun and cheap. We took the ride from vohwinkel (free parking here is a bonus) after stopping by for a late brunch at the local cafe. The highlights of this trip are the zoo, the Bayer site, the spot where tuffi the elephant fell in the river wupper in 1950 and of course the magnificent views all round. I recommend stopping at the Hauptbahnhof stop for a great shopping experience particular at the city arkaden with all the cafes and parlours. All in all, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity that we couldn't afford to miss. Would recommend to anyone.
Although busy as times this is an interesting way to see the town. Only €1.60 single trip ticket which are bought from the stations, remember to stamp the ticket.
Public transportation rocks. This is the way folks get around town. If you are visiting Wuppertal and don't take at least take it between one or two stops, you will miss out. Really unique experience, fun for the kids, great view of the river, cool architecture. Don't skip it. We drove up from Solingen, parked at one end and took the train to the shopping district, did a bit of walking around, enjoyed ice cream and returned.
It's the fastest way to get from one end of the city to the other one. The train is swinging and fun to sit on it. Some of the stations are restored to the original condition. The people of Wuppertal are proud of there Schwebebahn and they have a good reason to be it.
Suspended from a railway line is not the usual way to travel around a city. Enjoyed the experience. Went from one end of the linear town to another.
We visited the Wuppertal suspension railway as part of a Great Railways journey package. I am not certain I'd have visited it in any other circumstances, Wuppertal is not the most picturesque destination, but the suspension railway is certainly unique and we can add it to the list of odd little railways we have ridden on. We went on the Kaiserwaggen, a restored turn of the century carriage originally ridden in by the Kaiser in 1900. We had coffee and cake on board as part of our package but it was such a horrible wet day the windows kept steaming up. Essentially a sort of tube train in the sky the railway is an essential part of the public transport network of the area, not just a curiosity, but if you are a fan of railways, well worth seeing, as it is unique.
This is great. Even if it means travelling miles to see this, it is worth it. First, this is NOT a tourist attraction, it carries many thousands of people to work and back every day. It is reasonably priced and great fun. Go to the terminal at Vohwinkle and travel to the end and back. It is about 13.5 km. It is great to 'fly' over the top of cars down the high street and then to go over the wupper river. This is a great experience to travel on this overhead rail system. The views are good and there are many stops, you will have experienced nothing like this before.
20 stations in 13.3 km in a city that stretches the length of the city, so you are never far from a useful stop. It is 115 years old and truly amazing. If visiting Wuppertal, do not miss the chance of a ride. With 85,000 passengers a day, and a train every few minutes, I was left wondering why every city doesn't have one. The answer of course is the unique shape and circumstances of the city.
You must ride on this overhead suspended railway. It's unque and wobbly.Ask about Tuffi the Elephant.Wuppertal is well worth a visit particularly in December when the Christmas Market is on.
Unfortunately I only had the chance to travel on it at night, briefly, but this was a cool experience. Built in 1901, the engineering is amazing and it is fun to travel on being suspended, it sways in the corners and rocks when people are getting on/off. Fun to ride!
Using advice from a TA reviewer that free parking was available near the Vohwinkel (West) end of the line, we followed the tracks from the ground until we got there. (It may be helpful to know there is a nice, large, clean rest room in the pastry shop across from where tickets are sold. Make sure to have a coin or two for the attendant.) We got day tickets which were less than 5Euro each. The ride was fun and the view of the city was awesome. You could ride it more than once and not see everything. I wish we'd had more time to check out some of the stops. The far eastern terminus with its "garage" for the cars and turning bay was particularly interesting. Check out my review of the Wupper Grill for a great place to eat at this stop.
Through the city the best mode of travel for sure. The flying bus is comfy, quick and has stations at each corner of the city. Over the wupper river its quite fun aswell.
The Schwebebahn , or suspended monorail is just part of the city's regular transport system, but it is also the main tourist attraction. The first train ran in 1901 , and still runs the 13 kilometre route , mostly suspended 12 metres along the course of the river Wuppertal. For a special treat you can take the special "Kaisers" and enjoy a drink as you glide over the city.
Loved this transit system...very cool. It is wonderful they never dismantled it years ago. All original. Try to do the night Kaiserwagen tour...it is excellent!!
It is original of course, having a flyiing train all over the city. Stations are really close, but to visit Wuppertal and don't catch the suspension railway is like you miss something for sure. Trains are small so avoid rush hours if you can
