Amazing architecture. Enjoy it. Nice basic collection of French, Spanish and German impressionists and expressionists
As described in previous reviews, this museum is in two buildlings, K21 and K20. There's a shuttle bus between them. K20 has the works by Kandinsky, Ernst, Picasso, and Mondrian, but it seems a little bit more "stuffy" than K21, which has a more lively feel (even though it's in an older building).
The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is a mouthful. So basics first, it's the art collection of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located in Düsseldorf and is made up of three different venues: the K20 at Grabbeplatz, the K21 in the Ständehaus and the Schmela Haus. K21 is based in the old parliament building. I must confess that I have seen the collection in K20 (top floor has a good and well displayed selection) but I never got round to seeing the K21 collection. What K21 does have is a funky cocktail bar designed by Jorge Pardo. They don’t have sake (I was looking to get a Tokyo Martini) but otherwise their selection is good. From whisky to wine to WeissBier to other drinks not starting with w. they have it. What’s odd is despite the great setting and table service, is that it always seems a little empty. Well you can hear your fellow guests and your throat is never parched so is it really that bad?
Nice basic collection of French, Spanish and German impressionists and expressionists. Overseas part not too exciting.
We really enjoyed the art collection, especcialy Picasso, Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Max Slevogt. The experience however, was really disappointing. We've literally been hunted by personnel, what gave us a rushed feeling. They follow every step you make with squeaky shoes at a 3 meters distance max and watch you watching art. Really awkward when you're alone in the room as a couple. We never experienced this before, normally guards just overview the room from the corner. It's getting to a point where the guard can't choose between who to follow when you split up as a couple in a devided room. When you walk to a name sign, who the artist is and what year it's from, the guard warns you that you're too close to the painting. They put the name sign there theirselves, so...??The personnel only speaks German. There are no signs of what you can and can't photograph, so when photo's aren't allowed, the personnel comes after you to find out what you have been fotographing. You have to leave all your belonings, but it's guarded. The museum hasn't got much art for the price you pay, but perhaps the high price is because of the high amount of guards?
We used to live in Dusseldorf in the 80s and it was great to revisit this art gallery. The spaces are magnificent and so are the art works. We visited the special exhibition on the vsiits to Egypt of Paul Klee and Max Slevogt, then the top floor, where there are some great pieces by Picasso, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Dali and others. We also loved the installation featuring lots of coloured squares of tissue paper, which you could interact with by removing a square or two.
What a fantastic place - the installation art is mesmeric and the interactive web is inspiring. Even if you are not keen on art this is something that reluctant teens and adrenalin junkies will enjoy. You can clamber on a wire trapeze like net 100+ feet in the air above the gallery floor for a unique perspective. Some of the other pieces are a little unusual and perhaps Emperors new clothes but well worth the trip.
A fine collection and amazing architectureOn the weekend I visited people were allowed on the roof which had steel mesh ropes for climbing.
remarkable collection of art, though the extensive Klee collection was on loan. The audioguide (free) was one of the best I've ever experienced. We lingered so long that we left for lunch at their Klee Restaurant and returned for several hours afterwards.
k20 - building with 20th century art. A modest collection in size but very strong in content. Some of the best works of kandinsky, picasso, lichtenstein, klee, miró, etc.On the first floor there is currently a beautiful light installation by Olafur Eliasson which is definitely worth seeing.k21 - building with 21st century art. Most impressive (and highly recommended) installation currently and until autumn 2014 - Tomás Saraceno's "in orbit". As the website says, it is net a construction made of steel wires stretched under the ceiling with inflated spheres resting on it. Visitors (up to 10 people at a time) can have access to it and experience hanging in the air 25 meters above ground. Tip: there is a free shuttle bus circulating between the two buildings.
Both K20 and K21 exceeded our expectations. K21 in particular had a wonderful variety of art done by people we've never heard of, most of it very recent as well. Not too much to overload you in any one exhibit and there are souvenir postcards for almost every room. There's a shuttle connection between the 2 - useful for when it's raining, as it was on our visit. K20's collection all first rate stuff, lots of German expressionists which you don't see much of outside Germany, or so it seems to me. Spent whole day in both and felt well rewarded.
While I was there they had a well curated retrospective of Kandinsky. and other modern paintersA pleasant hour on a rainy afternoon
The quadriennale dusseldorf 201 has several exhibitions in different museums in Dusseldorf. As part of it I visited the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K 20 Grabbeplatz. They have a beautiful exhibition of works by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. And besides this special the museum has a very intersting collection of modern art. Well worth to visit this museum, right opposite the Opera House.
Kunstsammlung is still one of the best European muse with notion for an interaction with the visitor. Friendly forwarded education communication and good , professional staff ! Splendid director work on exhibition.Always worth visit !
