Do not visit expecting the mammoth size of the normal European Castles. However this small castle Tower has its own charm. The view from the courtyard gives a good glimpse of a large part of charming Bielefeld. The open air restaurant gives a good chance to sit and relax . The tower is well lit in the night too, however its best to view on a bright day.
We called in for coffee and cake when the restaurant was not busy. The waitress chose to clear tables rather than take the order. 2 groups arrived after us and she chose to serve them ahead of us and ignore us. After 30 minutes waiting we stood to leave and she rudely said 'I am coming' to which we said 'too late' and left. We do not know why she chose to be so rude. It is really sad because it is a beautiful place with a very ignorant waitress. This is the first poor review I have ever written in Germany and have written many which are all at least good.
- Nice walk up to the Castle- Nice City Views- Little to do when up there- Nice restaurant- Nice pedestrian and bicycling area through the forest
The medieval festival was fantastic lots to see and do, was a great day out seeing how people used to live. The down side was €3 plus €1 phand for a bottle of coke otherwise a well organised festival
This small castle was undergoing a lot of renovation so we could not appreciate as much as we would have liked. We attended the civil portion of a family wedding in one of the city offices in the castle. Also a wedding lunch. The restaurant was very good with local cuisine (if the Germans don't mind that word)
Nice walk through forest to castle (or though you can drive up if you want) which unfortunately is covered in scaffolding and sheeting ( and has been for some time apparently).Good views over Bielefeld. Toilets available and a nice resaurant too. Information plaques are also in English which helps.
it was really mind blowing my first visit to the old holdings in 2005 when there was a medieval festival with many actors in costumes full with props like terra cotta utensils they even had a real live black smith and dont talk about the horses and the knights and the food and there is nothing better than hot honey wine from the viking tradition it was all there and it happens every year like the changing of the leaves which is also another reason i visit the old fort
Half term with kids (15 & 12) - All totally tivited by the museum, built into the stone ramparts over 3 foors, 2 underground. We spent 2 hours and needed another 2 (adults), Highly efficient emotion-free displays of a horrific time, no melodrarma, the facts, stats and pics stood for themselves. Definitely take the english speaking tour with headphones or risk an anadine experience. Had lunch in the village at the SS HQ for strategy - unmissable. Castle intself impressive, reeked of historic relevance.Don't miss if in the aread.
The catacombs underneath the Burg are a must see attraction, they also have a very fine Restaurant. There is parking near the Burg with hiking paths with scenic views over Bielefeld. you can also climb the stairs to the top of the tower to enjoy a 360 view of the Teutoburger forest and the City of Bielefeld.
Bielefeld,s nr.1 attraction. This is a must visit,& worth it.Especially when the sparrenburg put on their week-end of festivals. The castle is still being renovated & the archloge are still finding old walls that have been hidden for years.
very pretty, spent a few evenings just lying on the grass next to the castle admiring the view and listening to music.
The Sparrenburg is very much a symbol of the city of Bielefeld. It's a bit of a climb if you're on foot, but it's worth it once you get there! The grounds are free to visit and it costs only a couple of euros to go up the Sparrenburg tower from where you get lovely panoramic views of Bielefeld and the Teutoburger Forest are fantastic. The staff at the kiosk are kind and helpful. There is a cafe and plenty of room for a picnic. Look out for the statue of Frederick William of Prussia!
A nice castle to visit if you are spending time in Bielefeld with amazing views over the city. Interesting and free to walk around the grounds. You only have to pay if you want to go up to the top of the tower and that was only a couple of EURO's each.
A must-see in Bielefeld. Has great views over the surrounding landscape, and is really interesting to walk around and explore, even if it's only a very small castle.
Castle has been rebuild but it doesn't change the charm of this placeI had a nice sunny afternoon there with some locals very nice to hang out and have a beer You also have a beautiful view of the whole city while being there A must see in Bielefeld
