One of many beautiful buildings in town, in a unique position. Probably one of the most photographed sites in Bamberg.
Old building on the river. Scenic views . Many spots for taking great photos.Entrance to the altes stadt - world heritage sight.Dont miss this building :)
Originally Gothic (1467) Baroque and Rococo touches were added in 1756 when massive murals were painted on the exterior walls. The building is on an artificial island because the bishops didn't want to relinquish any land to the city. Tall arched bridges connect the island on either side to the city center. The Regnitz River flows under the bridges & provides beautiful scenery to view this unusually colorful structure.
A gem of a place to visit and full of a number of buildings which will have you looking again and again. The Rathaus is just such an example but look at the murals, the delicately carved adornments and the position of the building across the fast flowing water. All of this adds to the visual effect. A walk around the town will show just how many examples of the old architecture remain.
Lovely porcelain exhibition, together with charming crib scene. Note that you are not allowed to photograph crib scene.
Just amazing to see this town hall surrounded by water on both sides. The art along the people was also quite unique, inc. some of the art being 3D.
I had been told that Bamberg's Altstadt was a beauty, and it's true, but the finest and most unusual building in the old town is its Rathaus, set seemingly precariously mid-bridge, colorful, charming, welcoming.I have been told that the citizens built it there to hold themselves aloof from Electors on one side and the Church, on the other, but there are alternative theories. Whatever the exact reason, the result is a delight. I couldn't get enough of it (though I admit I didn't visit its porcelain collection - just doesn't interest me). The setting and the exterior were plenty for me - not just the much-photographed view of that amazing river-straddle, but also the ornately painted sides of the building. There are several reasons to visit the old town (the cathedral and the Residenz just two that come quickly to mind) but for me the highlight was the Altes Rathaus - give it a look - Quick ps - if you don't have much time on your travels it's an easy day trip from Nuremberg - that's the way I did it, and it was worth it - particularly using the Bayern rail day ticket - a great deal.
The Bamberg's Old City Hall has a unique location astride a bridge. The half-timbered section was finished in the 14th century and well kept up to present. It has also housed Ludwig Collection of porcelain inside. This landmark was well worth visit by tourists.
Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall) is Bamberg's famous landmark and favourite theme of its postcards. It was built between 1461 and 1467 in Gothic style and for a very serious reason. The bishop of that time didn't let the citizens to build a new City Hall on his grounds. That's why they created an artificial island on River Regnitzarm to make it happen. The building was the border between the Bamberg's citizens and the old rule bishop mountain. In 18th c.Johann Anwander created the amazing murals, which cover both sides of the building. Some features like a little angel on the top and a woman's leg that pops out of the painting, give a 3D impression. The scenes of the murals are all allegorical. The Rococo balcony and heraldic relief have the signature of Joshua Bonaventura Mutschele. The half-timbered, yellow and white house, Rottmeisterhäuschen, used to be the residence of the leaders of the guards. Nowadays Altes Rathaus houses the Bamberg Sammlung Ludwig, one of the best porcelain collections in whole Europe. Altes Rathaus was built between 2 beautiful bridges on River Regnitzarm that used to be private initially: Obere brücke (Upper bridge) and Untere brücke (Lower bridge). From these bridges you may admire the City Hall but also the river, the old town and Klein Venedig (Little Venice), former fishermen houses.
From an architectural perspective alone, this building is well worth a visit. As non-Europeans, we are amazed at the age and construction methods of buildings such as this. Add the historic elements and this one of the most important buildings to visit in Bamburg. Visiting early or late in the day is best to avoid the congestion of tourists at the site. There is no cost so no reason not to spend some time here gaining an understanding and appreciation of the Rathaus's significance.
Just a fabulous interesting and historic building to be able to see. Take lots of photos....every vantage spot has lots to offer. Paintings on the wall are excellent and look out for the foot poking out from the wall. Top building that has a porcelain collection if you are interested. (we did not have the time unfortunately)
Passed the Rathaus many times as I walked over the bridge across the river Regnitz. The rathaus was well kept although I wasn't able to go inside. I found the people in Bamberg to be friendly and helpful. My experience in other parts of Germany wasn't anything like what I experienced in Bamberg. The city was top notch.
Wonderful paintings outside the Rathaus. The place is beautiful as you walk over the bridge with the many shops and nice cafes and bars. I loved this spot and highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.
What's exquisite? The painted outside of the old city hall that nestles next to the river. Almost too overwhelming for words. The detail is amazing. And look for the foot poking out from the wall. There are a number of vantage points with the. Best one being from the upper bridge but each vantage point helps show different aspects of a beautiful building.
Bamberg is know for the variety of its creches, but this one was outstanding. It was an illuminated city, with plenty of detail. The ornaments on display on the stairway were unusual, too.
