You know, when you start on a cruise everything is so exciting and new, and you have so many choices! If you are able, walk up and visit this cathedral. Not everyone is able to do so. While this is not as elaborate as some, I still love to sit and reflect and think of the people who gave their best to build something this beautiful. The town square is nice also, and worth walking around. I enjoyed.

Move away from the water area and the crowds disappeared. Walking uphill isn't for everyone but the reward is worth it. We approached from st michaels and was impressed by the area near the Dom. The Dom itself is quite plan and solid looking. Free entry

My wife and I toured Bamberg Cathedral with our tour guide, Dorothea, who told us that the Reformation got rid of such Baroque features as stained glass windows. However, even though the cathedral had no stained glass, it did have fantastic carvings inside and out, as well as paintings on the ceilings. The cathedral was massive, dark, and cold, but it also had lots to see and photograph. For the price--free--it was a treat. I don't mean this as a backhanded compliment: Bamberg Cathedral would still have been a treat even if admission had been charged!

The inside is a little bare as some have mentioned. I do like, however, the Evergreen trees at the altar - very pretty. There was also some sort of diorama on display - about a baby being baptised, which was nicely done and pretty.

We visited the Diocesan Museum at the Dom and found it very interesting, particularly viewing the papal cloaks dating back to 1000. Since were were there over the Christmas period there was also a exhibition of various nativity scenes from all over the world, some centuries old.

Bamberg is an amazing place. The Dom dominates the sky line and is well worth a visit as it houses many interesting sculpture including the Bamberger Reiter. Close by are the Old and New Residencies of the various bishops of Bamberg across seven or eigth hundred years. The town is built on seven hills and the old central part is very quaint and picturesque. The town is famous for beer -- there are several breweries and it is possible to buy a tour ticket to the various inns that sell the ales and the breweries that make themA lovely place and small enough to wander about easily.

While an impressive structure, the inside is fairly plain, certainly not the most beautiful Cathedral that you will see in Germany. We were there for the Christmas markets, so we visited, but I wouldn't make the trip to Bamberg just for the Cathedral. Bamberg itself is a wonderful old town, and the walked through the town was worth the trip.

This cathedral was very plain inside (for a gothic style cathedral) and thus quite different from others in the Franconia region of Bavaria. However, it is still worth visiting, particularly on a trip to this lovely historic town.

If you're of the mindset that you see one church and you've seen them all then make sure The Dom is That church. Simple, historic & an quietly elegant church, sitting amidst a great setting close to Michelsburg and with views over the red tiled roofs of Bamberg

The cathedral is an imposing building at an imposing height - it can be seen from quite a distance and commands attention. Situated in the same square with the Neue Residenz and the older complex where prince/bishops lived before the Residenz was built, it is to my mind the most striking exterior in the location. It was built in the 11th century, but burned and the "new" structure dates from the 14th. As powerful as the exterior is, the interior offers some fine work of major medieval German artists. The most touted sculpture is the work of Tilman Riemenschneider, the tomb of its founder, Emperor henry II and his queen Cunigunde, and it's impressive, But I found even more interesting the Nativity altar by another great sculptor/wood carver Veit Stoss. And there are many other, lesser but still beautiful works to be seen.My very favorite is one of the first sculptures you see when you enter - if you look up. Der Bamberger Reiter (the Bamberg Horseman, or Rider) interests not just because it is a fine sculpture, but because of the mystery that surrounds it. Who IS this unmasked man? What is the face of a so-called "wild man" doing below the horse's front hooves? And who created the sculpture? Many a theory has been forwarded as to the former - possible old testament king, possible Emperor (Stephen, it is most often claimed), maybe even Jesus Christ! The Nazi saw it as a symbol of the "pure" German...hmmmm...It may be best to see this strong, curious, almost tender figure as a general one, perhaps an idealized "Christian soldier" or courtly knight. Well, three good reasons to visit the interior, and there are more. I hope you'll include it in your trip to Bamberg, as I did!

beautiful building and interior. Well worth visiting. The light inside the church was stunning. Lovely sights around the church also

This cathedral was a bit of a surprise for us. It looks massive on the outside, but fairly small on the inside. It has the tomb of Pope Clement II, the only pope buried north of the Alps, but it's almost impossible to find because it's hidden behind the Bishop's chair. Also, there are no stained glass windows; they were removed during a "purification" of the church. There is the tomb(s) of Emperor Heinrich II and Empress Kunigunde but not much else to see. If you do decide to visit, pickup a guidebook at the enterance for one Euro.

It was free, busy but not overwhelmed. It has an altar at each end, very unusual, and the famous Bamberger Ritter statue - apparently the only one in a cathedral on horseback. But many other glorious statues and paintings, and the whole is airy and vast.

Bamberg Cathedral is massive and can be seen from just about anywhere in the city. The spires dominate the skyline. Inside are artistic gems and the tomb of the only Pope to be buried north of the Alps Pope Clement II. The tomb chest of Emperor Heinrich II and Empress Kunigunde greet the visitor in the nave. It is ornately carved of Solnhofen Marble by Tilman Riemenschneider between 1499 and 1513. My favorite pieces from the cathedral were the Bamberg Rider sculpted in the 13th century and the "Christmas Altar" made in 1523 of limewood by famous Nuremberg wood carver Veit Stoss. These are a must see. The organ in the cathedral is nice but I thought the organ in St. Stephans church was much more impressive. Ask the assistants that are roaming throughout the cathedral for information. Most of them speak English and they were eager to tell you some stories about the cathedral. Another surprise I found was a plaque commemorating the contributions of Claus von Stauffenberg in World War II. He seems to have monuments all over the city and was very revered in Bamberg.
