but if you are pressed for time, skip this one. Or if you are not so fit, do this one. Its a MUCH easier walk up a smaller hill to get to the castle
Make sure you visit Neuschwanstein first to avoid the crowds, as most will do Hohenschwangau first since it's nearer to the entrance. For this, expect a queue since you can't be at both castles at the same time, but with good time planning, you can make sure the queue is a short one. Everyone says that this is a better castle, which is obvious since Neuschwanstein was only partially decorated inside before the poor King passed on. A guided tour is needed and despite it being a short one (30-40 minutes) it was very informative.
Don't miss the old palaca when in Hohenschwangau. Take the audio guide and enjoy the history. Richard Wagner was there in the past, you can see the bed he slept :)
Neuschwanstein gets all of the hype for it's external appearance, and it is great in its own right. But the interior of Hohenschwangau is the best we saw. Tour is amazing - guide was very informative and funny. Most museum/castle tours are very dry, but this was not at all.
After about a 10 minute wait for tickets we walked up to this beautiful castle. We were thankful for the bathrooms at the top. We waited 20ish minutes for our tour to begin. Our tour guide was informative and funny. He answered tons of questions and sure brought the history alive. It was a fun day out for our family of 4.
Visited in February following reviews on here that said how crowded it gets in the summer - it was good advice as even though we booked tickets in advance and arrived first thing in the morning, 7 coachloads had arrived by 9.30am!!! The castles look pretty in the snow too and its not too hot to walk up the hills. As it was early in the morning and off-season our tour wasn't full so we were able to move around and see things but I imagine that in the summer with a full tour it would be pretty difficult to look at everything properly. Even though it was a beautiful sunny day outside this castle is dark and claustrophobic with a real sense of unhappiness about it-easy to see why poor King Ludwig and his brother Prince Otto who grew up here went mad! Definitely worth a look but if you want faux-medieval castle built by German royalty then Haut Konigsberg in Alsace is better. Tyr to visit out of season, try to go early and don't take anyone with you who has trouble walking as there are lots of hills and stairs.
The train ride to the castle had gorgeous scenery, made all the more beautiful as it was in the dead of winter! I bought tickets that got me to both castles, and the tour in each one lasted about 30 minutes. Definitely worth it. The gift shop has some nice stuff, and the views from near the top that look out over the lake are worth the trek! No photos allowed inside unfortunately, but it'll stay with you.
Hohenschwangau castle, is very close to the more famous, Neuschwanstein castle, but is worth a visit. This castle was used by King Ludwig II's parents. The castle is very impressive and even if you don't go in, the horse and cart ride to get there is worth the trip alone. It was a beautiful day and the scenery was well worth the many pictures we took. A really wonderful day in conjunction with Neuschwanstein castle
Guided tour was excellent. On time. The castle is authentic and no restauration.Booked your tour prior visiting.
It would be a shame to miss this castle and only visit its more famous neighbor - 23 euros for both castles. This visit is more pleasant because groups go by 35 instead of 60 and rooms are very bright, magnificent paintings well lit, you can really get a feel for how they lived. Also it is best to start with this one to follow the historic timeline. All the visited rooms are fully furnished and beautiful. It is a pity photos are not allowed.Practical tips: They say it takes 20 minutes to climb there. It took us 10 minutes only and we didn’t run. It’s important to know your legs and the fact that they also overstated to climb to Neuschwanstein from 30 to 40mn because it could make a difference between visiting 2 or only one castle. The visit lasts exactly 30 mn so technically you do not need a difference of 2 hours between your 2 entrance times. Getting to one or the other castle can also take longer if you wish to take a horse-drawn carriage because there is a big queue and they don’t go very fast.We thought reservations were only recommended in the summer months. Our visit took place on a Friday (Jan 2nd), we arrived on site at 10:00 am and had no problems at all getting immediate tickets but after 11:00 am (after the train arrives from Münich) a huge – over an hour – queue formed even through tours leave very often. You also need to know there are many stairs and I don't think there is an elevator.
