Currently this bridge is under renovation. It has a walkway specially built for ppl to cross the bridge.but most part of the bridge is blocked.only can see the start and end part of the bridge.
We walked across the old stone bridge and took in the sights. We had a couple of sausages on the old town side of the bridge. The old town is a very pleasant sight and a good walk around. There is a museum (free) on the old town side in the old stone tower. Taking a few breaks at a outdoor seating and having a glass of beer is part of the allure. Near the bridge you can take a short (2hrs) boat tour on the Danube which is very worthwhile.
Our river boat docked within walking distance of the Old Stone Bridge in Regensburg, Germany. The current restoration has already taken 8 years and was less than half finished when we saw it. This iconic bridge was constructed between 1135 & 1146 with 16 arcades and 1,000 feet long with medieval tools. The joke is that the reconstruction with modern equipment will take longer than the original construction. Two master builders competed to see who could finish their side first, that is why the original only took 11 years to build.Look closely at the stones used to construct the bridge--they are really boulders. There is a famous sausage restaurant on the dock right at the base of the bridge. So plan to eat a meal there when you visit.
Probably would be cool but currently being renovated and covered by scaffolding. Hopefully this summer there will be more to see or photo.
After decades of carelessly opening this unique building to normal traffic, the Steinerne Brücke was heavily damaged. Now it is slowly returning into the open, though still taking a few more years to return to its full spendour.
iT is the most beautiful place in Reensburg and the sight in around is simply breathtaking. You can take a stroll and enjoy in the nearby BEER gardens... A must VISIT !!!!
Although renovation work hides the full splendour of this ancient stone bridge, it's still a great site to see, and a testimony to what was achievable hundreds of years ago. Great views of the Danube.
I really love the bridge and the view from it...but now it is under renovation and the process is very slow.
Not a great sight to see now that it is being restored, but a cool feeling walking over such an old bridge. Will be a great sight once the restoration is complete.
You can only see a portion of the Old Stone Bridge because it is being renovated for the 21st century. Still, it demonstrates the boldness of its original builders centuries ago.
The bridge is actually worth 5 stars, but construction work continues to cause severe disruption - you really can't see much of the historic bridge as of this writing. I have no idea when the work is supposed to be finished.
The bridge is under repair--not much to see at all. However, the town itself is wonderfully old and so charming...truly a trip back into time. Just wander around the entire city, which isn't that big, and you will have a great day. In fact, I think the entire town is a World Heritage Site!
Four years ago I rated this Regensburg landmark 5 points, because of the historic value, the medieval legends surrounding the bridge and the stunning view on the Regensburg "Altstadt". In this time only the far bridgehead (on the north side) was closed with hoarding and canopies; the traffic was rerouted over a temporary steel bridge. This building site was still there, but the nuisance has spread in this four years to the city bridge head, leaving only a small center part of the bridge in view. The stone "watchman" statue was also removed. I understand that this medieval treasure needs loving care and periodic maintenance, but this work lasts now more than four years and seeing the hoarding, canopies and steel bridge structures, this work will not be finished in a hurry, putting the "Old Stone Bridge" at the bottom of the list of Regensburg attractions for the time being. I trust that some day the "Old Stone Bridge" can be admired again in all its glory, earning the 5 point rating again.
The history of the bridge is amazing. It is currently u Der renovation so little of the bridge can be seen. No need to go out of your way at this time to see it.
