Took a little finding, someway out of town so need a car, lots of tecky stuff, slightly one sided version of the war though interesting - lost out on production contracts to state owned suppliers, not sure I'd make too much of that as an injustice if I were them. Great view of airfield and airships. Again (see Zep Museum) immaculate cafe. And again (see Zep Museum) worth exiting via the gift shop for once. Certainly know how to feed and look after their guests! Def worth a look.
We visited this museum whilst on holiday. Admittance was included in the Lake Constance 'Rover Ticket' which we had already purchased. The museum is a 15 minute train ride from Friedrichafen station, then a few minutes walk along the road. The museum details the history of the Dornier Aircraft Company, from its inception, its production of huge and impressive Flying Boats just prior to and during WW2, and the progression to date through smaller aircraft types, and into aerospace technology.Unlike the Zeppelin museum, the Second World War in not glossed over, and there is a very informative, and relatively unbiased section devoted to this time.Lots of displays, with information cards in English, and other languages, then once through the small exhibits the visitor route takes you down to a hanger like display area with full size exhibits of many aircraft, some of which are accessible. All rounded off by a decent cafe/restaurant with reasonably priced food and drink, the outside area of which has a view of the operational side of the airfield. The museum also has a well stocked shop, with some interesting souvenirs.Well worth a visit, allow a minimum of 3 hours.
Nothing much to add to the existing reviews, except to compliment the technical staff. If you have particular questions, there are people with in depth knowledge about all aspects of Dornier who are only too pleased to answer questions. Not sure whether they speak English, but I guess most can respond. If you speak German, of course you can go into much more detail.
Located on the edge of the Friedrichshafen airport, this museum documents the highly innovative contribution of Dornier to modern aviation. Great if you like planes. You can also get a great view of the Zeppelins operating from the airport.
A must for technology interested audience! A good historical overview of the diverse products Dornier was into.
we had in this museum Xmas party 2 years ago, so we were in all museum with perfect and interest interpretation. It was great and fantastic, and everyone in museum was very kind on us.
Outstanding exhibits from the earliest days of aviation through space travel. The Sunday buffet is excellent!
The Dornier museum might slide past your radar screen when planning a trip to Friedrichshafen - but that would be a pity. Dornier was and remains a leading company in aviation - it continues with NASA on the space program - but their historical work in flying boats and pushing the envelope on flying gets an amazing treatment in the museum. It also has a lovely gift shop and cafe with great views of the airport and incoming Zeppelin.
Don't expect a lot of Dornier's WW2 aircraft or work on display. This museum time lines his work from his early days through to the modern time on space technology. Very interesting, covers a lot about his flying boats. Nice static displays in the hanger and in the outside exhibits. It's opposite the Zeppelin Airship hanger ( modern) which is fitting since Dornier started with Zeppelin. Dornier's contribution to aviation is to be admired and is a worthy museum to visit. the restaurant look good but didn't stay as went to the Zeppelin museum. You get discount if purchase tickets for both at either museum.
A great day out on a beautiful, sunny August day. There were many national and international exhibitors and there was such a terrific atmosphere. It was a great occasion also for kids and it was good to see that so many families made the effort to attend. And don't miss the Museum Shop!
Highly recommended, spent around 1-2 hours with a lovely range of models, a lot of movies and documents and full size planes and helicopters, when I visited had a wonderful model train presentation from local enthusiasts. A must go! Save some money by being a combo ticket that also includes the Zeppelin museum!
Last week, as part of a quick visit to Friedrichshafen (related to Dangerous Goods), I had the opportunity to visit the Dornier museum, knowing a little bit about Dornier airplanes. This museum provides a very interesting presentation of old and new technology, pre- and post-WW2, including technology excursions into space technology and new manufacturing technologies (carbon fibre) as a special exhibition. If you are an aviation enthusiast, this is a must see.Exhibits on the Do-17 and thereafter are not available, but the presentation of the Dornier history (not only the aviation part) is very impressive, especially the historic Dornier Wal and Merkur
Very nice collection of models, a lot of movies and documents and a few planes. A must go! Save some money by being a combo ticket that also includes the Zeppelin museum.
We felt that this was a great museum. Lots of exhibits spanning 100 years of Dornier all with an explanation in English. If you are interested in aircraft then this is a must do museum The restaurant/cafe has an outside seating area where you can sit and enjoy a beer whilst watching a Zepplin land and take off (if you get the timing right). A great afternons entertainment.
Interesting Museum with a lot information about Dornier and his/its aircraft. The Museum also offers an exhibit of a lot of real planes and space equipment manufactured by dornier.Interesting, not expensive and near the airport.Must see in friedrichshafen!
