We were stunned by the beauty of the place and its excellent preservation. Its unquestionable beauty aside, the complex really gives an idea how the Cistercian monastery looked like. Plus the entry ticket is cheap, the audio-guide (in English) informative, and all of it just a few minutes by a direct bus (bus stop is very near to the Abbey) from the city center of Tubingen. If you have some extra time, it is worth to take one of the trails starting at the monastery, and leading through the Schönbuch Natural Park. The shortest walk is 45 min, and even taking a small part of it allows a magnificent views to the valley and the monastery. Absolute gem!
This monatery is an awesome place near Tübingen that worths a visit! The ticket entrance is cheap and there are some good coffeehouses and restaurants at Bebenhausen also. Great place!
Bebenhausen Abbey is definitely worth making a detour for. A friend from work drove me over here, and we strolled around the grounds, soaking in the history of the place. We visited too late to tour inside the buildings, but the grounds alone are very interesting. You get a real sense of the power and wealth that the church must have possessed when this monastery was in its heyday.
Although not the most famous of Germany's medieval Cistercian monasteries (cf. Maulbronn), Bebenhausen (just 2.5 mls/4 km outside Tübingen) boasts a few real attractions, apart from its idyllic setting: its overall preservation, including secondary buildings and fortifications (although alas not the church in its entirety), a series of noteworthy structures from the romanesque-gothic transition to high and late gothic (the filigree crossing flèche) and the early renaissance. In addition to the famed Cistercian lapidary work, it features noteworthy 14th paintings on vaults and walls and an unusual 15th c. panel of Christ and St. Bernhard of Clairvaux, with Bebenhausen in the background (remarkable for having survived 16th c. iconoclasm more or less in place). To skip a few centuries: after the end of WWII, Bebenhausen's monastic buildings served as venue for the founding diet of the 'Land' (federal state) of South Wuerttemberg-Hohenzollern. In short: well worth a detour when in Southern Germany, at least as important by itself as the entire city of Tuebingen...
It's an asemble of old buildings with monstery character and a lot o charme. The famous philosopher Friedrich W. J. Schelling was living here at the end of the 18th century for several years. Today there ist also a small museum to underline the importance of this historical place. In the monatery church you can find a nice picture of the creation of Eve from the 'rip' of Adam in paradise together with the creation of moon and sun (Schalldeckel der Kanzel). Very often there are classical concerts in one of the historical rooms.
Kloster Bebenhausen is a delightful place. The setting is beautiful, with many nice vistas in all directions, park away from the Kloster and enjoy the walk. To tour the interior of the Kloster buildings (church, etc.) requires an admission. There is plenty to see without paying, but the interiors are well worth seeing. The audio guide is interesting and does a nice job of trying to bring the buildings history to life - I recommend it.
Hiking through the Naturpark and stumbling upon Bebenhausen was one of the most magical moments as it suddenly appeared beyond the sloping hillside. This beautiful old monestary, set amongst a charming little village, is a must see!
A really-really old monastery, which is absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking.
Well worth a visit. Winter time is great as there are not too many people about. get on the bus 828 from the Hauptbahnhof and you'll be there in 15 minutes. For a great meal , the Landhotel-Hirsch is just a short walk away. Prices may look a little steep, but the food is fantastic.
Bebenhausen is our favorite German monastery, being well-preserved and medieval with a lovely setting on the edge of the Schoenbuch Forest. We revisit many times as the monastery and its setting are so enjoyable, and it is always one of our favorite places to take foreign visitors. The abbey itself is excellent. This was the last residence of the King of Wuerttemberg after he was forced to abdicate after WW-I. There is also some post-WW-II history as it served as the first seat of government for the unified lands of Wuerttemberg and Hohenzollern. A joy to visit at any time of the year!!!!!!
very easy place to visit - been there several times. i like to go in the winter when no one is around. also a great trailhead for hikes and biking into the surrounding forests or tubingen.
The monstary is very close to town and a most enjoyable walk. There are several routes, but the most beautiful is the one up through the forrest. The day we set out it was cold and drizzly, but descending onto the Kloister as we emergerd from the forrest was truly amazing. Wandering through the settlement at Bebenhausen, takes you back to another time. Even though we didnt try to gain entrance to the actual church, there was plenty still to see.The history of these buildings is quite significant having been home to both the state parlament and Nepolean at different times. Its an hour or so walk each way depending on where you start in Tubingen, or if you drive and park near the forrest entrance it is much shorter. Our group decided to make a bigger trip and ended up hiking for 5 hours on other tracks. This is a must see if your visiting Tubingen
