Lovely to see this restored church. Tastefully brought back to life after bomb damage in the 940s. Interesting modern stained glass windows and a very unusual ceiling with glass 'sails'.
We viewed this church while undertaking a self guided tour of the city. The building suffered bombing during WW2 and has been rebuilt (as has most of the city which accounts for the low number of historic buildings compare to other European cities). The interior has a more modern "feel" than would be expected from a church of this age, particularly the stained glass windows and ceilingThe organ was similar to many seen in Spain (unlike France and the UK) which was also unexpected. It was interesting to see but would be difficult to describe as spectacular when compared to other similar attractions elsewhere but certainly worth the visit
Stuttgart was almost completely flattened during the war, including the Stiftskirche. Its rebuilding is glorious. The architect has not tried to recreate the original building but has managed to design a modern space which includes and complements the pieces of original artwork that survive. I found it absolutely beautiful.
the new modern ceiling is very impressive, whilst remaining quite historical with the tombs etc. I liked how it detailed how it was damaged after bombing in WW2 and its refurb therafter
This old church is in a good location in Stuttgart mitte. It is not big but nice well looked after. nice and friendly staff, If you love churches do not miss this one. Historical place to see.
Since Stuttgart was decimated during World War II, there is virtually nothing older than 70 years. This church was also severely damaged but they managed to save parts of it and rebuild the rest. It is an interesting church to visit.
In a lovely square in Stuttgart outer part of church is original interior is new as it was bombed during world war 11.
The Stiftskirche is situated smack in one of the most charming areas of Stuttgart. It is small and beautiful, and the pictures just inside speak eloquently of the history of the building and its enduring inspiration to those of faith
Some reviewers complain that the Stiftkirche has modern elements, but they're interwoven so graciously that a complete architectural feel results that is rare in Germany, and uniquely beautiful. Many older elements that were recovered after the church was damaged in air raids have been incorporated into the modern re-design. Some of the oldest tombs in Stuttgart are here, including the tomb of the founder of the Wurttemberg noble family in Stuttgart, Ulrich der Stifter who died in 1265. If you'd like more information on the history of the church, there is a booklet available in a variety of languages at the little shop in the entrance. Don't forget to take a look at pictures of the ruined church in the same area.
Still standing despite two world wars. An old building full of character right in the middle of the City
After the war, the walls were still standing, but most of the interior was gone. Recently, they finally got rid of the modern decor from the postwar period and restored the church to more or less its original appearance. The nicest part is the choir, with its carved wooden pews for the elites of yesteryear.
We went here because my wife's ancestors are from the Stuttgart area and may very well have attended this church. Inside was a lady who explained the history of the church from when it was built, through its destruction in WW II and its rebuilding including famous people that are buried there. While we were there someone was practicing on the organ (which supposedly has about 5000 pipes) and that just added to the experience.
This is one of the oldest surviving churches in the area. It was badly damaged during World War II, but they have done a remarkable job of restoring it and weaving the new architectural elements with the old ones.
Very nice looking interior and more modern than I though, great organ love to attend their organ concert, has to be good.
Very modern [rebuilt after being bombed in 1944], but several medieval sculptures have been saved and are on exhibition. Incredible pipe organ; beautiful music. Beautiful in its starkness.
