Walk mid way unto the bridge for a wonderful picture of the Heidelberg Castle high on the mountain. For the best shot of the bridge gate and tower walk down the street about 100 feet and you can frame your shot through the structures on both sides of the street. Lots to see at this location but make sure you walk down to the bridge which is only a couple of blocks or so from the town square
It's old, it's cool and we had a hotel that looked out on it. It brings you to the philosophers way too. It's a fine construction.
This bridge has a real cool gate at one end, and the bridge can be accessed from the Old Town. You can also walk along river and get good views of the bridge. The best view of the gate is from the Old Town.
Walk out on the bridge and do a 360. Take your camera. The Romans built the 1st bridge around 40AD, hundreds of thousands of years after the Heidelberg Man lived there. In 863AD, there was a monastery where the castle stands today. Heidelberg was founded in 1196. Today's bridge is relatively modern having been built in the 1700s.
During winter when we visited this was a stunning bridge to get photos from. It wasn't too busy even though it was at 11:30am so you can sneek out into the middle and take some stunning photos of the castle, the gate on the bridge, the river, the houses and several other zoomed in favourites in the old town. It is nice just walk across and stand in the little alcoves for pedestrians to watch the boats go by. Take your time and really enjoy this bridge.
Stand on in the midlle of the Alte Brucke and let yourself look around the surrounding, the Neckar valley, one of the most beautifull valley in Germany. The Heidelberg old town with its well known Castle ruin, the Neckar river are part of the Neckar valley. On the day time, the beautifull scenery will rewarding your eyes with a best refreshing. If you like of landscape photography, take a picture from the bridge and from the other side of the old bridge. The perfect combination of old town, castle ruin, a river and the old bridge with its twin tower will lead your camera to take a lot of shots. Wait until evening comes, the lights start to lightening the surrounding, then the view just turn to be a romantic one. Start the exploration with walk around the old town, climb up to the castle then just go down to reach this bridge and walk over to the other side. Bring a comfortable shoes with you then you could enjoying the exploration moment. Don't forget to have a best shot of evening's view taken from the other side of the old bridge, this will be your remarkable souvenir of Heidelberg.
The bridge was built of Neckar Valley sandstone in 1786 to replace the previous 8 wooden bridges that were each washed away by the Neckar River. The Pepper Pots at the entrance to the bridge served as the gatekeeper's apartment & as a prison. Today the bridge is closed to traffic. The brass monkey to the left of the entrance is supposed to bring wealth by touching the mirror, many children by touching the mice & a return to Heidelberg by touching the hand. Tourists & guides like to insert their own heads inside the opening in the monkey's head. A plague next to the monkey reads, "Why are you looking at me? Look around & you will probably see more monkeys like me in Heidelberg." There is no charge to see this bridge located in Old Town and walk across it.
Low key, but attractive medieval bridge, but great views of the castle, the old town, the river and the river front. Worth the walk if you are in old town.
Castle and the bridge, it makes a perfect combination here. Especially under the setting sun, the river glow with golden reflections. And it is near to the old town.
The original wooden bridges on the same spot used to get ripped away by flood waters in the Neckar, but in the meantime they have a stone bridge with cute towers on each side. Easy to reach if you are in the Altstadt anyway. Nice view of it from the castle.
