We stopped in Oberwesel for a coffee but could not find anything open. Disappointing so we walked along the town fortifications back to our car. I love the way that the town has just built itself around the walls. In some places, houses abut against the walls and in other places, there is narrow roadway in between. Numerous tunnels feed traffic and pedestrians on to the main road. It's free so take your time and enjoy it.
Very unique fortifications, explore them, walk on them, discover a nice and very typical Rhine valley town.
Whilst having a quiet evening walk, looking for somewhere to eat, we found this wall and walked along it.What secrets does it hold and the troubles it has stood through?
Very well preserved city fortification walls along the most scenic portion of the Rhine. We didn't do a tour, just climbed up and enjoyed during the late afternoon.
Oberwesel has one of the best-preserved city walls in Germany. (If you are British, think Chester.) Don't miss taking this excellent and interesting walk.
Walking on top of the city walls brings you back to the early days, where fortification walls were a necessity for survival against the enemy. Nice and beautiful views over the - city of Oberwesel - and the river Rhine - called the Lorreley at that section. Highly recommended.
We enjoyed the walk our first afternoon. We climbed the tower, had nice views of the Rhine, and saw inside the attached church.
Enjoyed the walk around town on the old castle wall. Even climbed one of the towers. The views were breath-taking!
As a history lover, seeing walls, gates, towers all dating back to the Middle Ages was a wonderful experience. The whole walk took about 2 hours, but that was taking our time and not rushing at all. Do it, great way to spend an afternoon.
You can access the city fortifications with one of the several stone steps along the walls. Once up, you can walk the length between the 7 or 8 tours covering almost the length of the current town. Delightful views of both Oberwesel and the Rhine River valley
This area is charming and historic. It is rich in scenic views and castles. You can go around the area and enjoy what the place can offer.
Disliked nothing; Oberwesel is a beatiful village on the Rhine River. Peaceful and quiet yet very accessible from Frankfurt and Koblenz. Be sure to take a day cruise on the Rhine. K-D is the primary provider and offers multiple options alllowing one to get off in all of the villages and return to you point of origin later in the day. The castles and scenery on the voyage is outstanding.
Nice old town fortifications give wonderful views of the castle, towers, village, and Rhein River. Walk the length to see the whole village.
That well preserved and very beautiful rocky city wall is, indeed, the best thing to do in the wine town of Oberwessel. The walk around its path is very interesting and, in some parts, provide nice views as well.It is worth a stop for stroll a bit by this old fortification.
You can walk on the city wall and actually climb to some of the towers. From the towers you can get good photos of trains, which are going by the Rhein...
