The hike isn't too long and the view of the Trier city is spectacular. It's a little tricky to find as the road is winding and can be confusing if you do not have the correct version of GPS installed. Not a must see as there are other things that you can spend time on especially if you are there around Christmas time.
The long arduous walk up to Mariensaule is more than rewarded with the stunning views of all of Trier from the top.
St. Mary's Column is situated on the highest point of the cliffs on the other side of the Moselle.Such a beautiful place to visit, there are a few steps to climb to reach the top we went during the day and again at night. It's so lovely at night you can see St Mary's Column for miles when its all lit up. The Panoramic views of Trier at night are fantastic to when the whole town is lit up , A visit is a must especially at night .
From our hotel room at the Park Plaza we could see this amazing St. Mary's column high up on this majestic hill in the distance!!! At nite we could see it lite up. We drove up to see it, and it was a wonderful ride. It was a sunny day but very cold. You ascend up on a little winding road, but when you get to the top, what a treat!!! You do a little walking to get to her, and the views from there are spectacular! The Moselle river is beautiful!
You can't miss St. Mary's Column, which is across the river Moselle on the highest point on the cliffs. The panorama is great from here and you can see for miles. You can view the entire city of Trier from here and there are multiple photo opportunities not only of Trier but up and down the Moselle River as well. Obviously, it should be visited on a clear day to take advantage of the landscape. We drove over and parked on the road below and walked up the stairs to the monument. It was built with donations from the citizens of Trier and dedicated in 1866 to commemorate the declaration by the Catholic Church of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. A crowned statue of St. Mary stands on a pillar over 130 ft high.Erected with donations from Trier citizens, it was dedicated in 1866, commemorating the declaration by the Catholic Church of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. It's worth a half hour of your time just for the photo opp.
Our group intended to climb all the way to the statue, however, the column was situated higher than we presumed. The nearest we got was ending up at the allotments on the Markusberg, from there on there might be a path towards or not, but as many in our group were grasping their last breath we decided to quit our attempt. Monument in honor of Our Lady. Monument and pedestal are combined 40 meters high and visible from afar, situated on the left side of the Moselle valley, 300 meters high on the Markusberg above district Trier-West/Pallien. The column, designed by sculptor Gottfried Renn (Speyer), was built under the direction of architect Joseph Weiss, in 1859 in a period of clashes between the Catholic population and the Prussian Protestant Government. Spring 2007 the monument was renovated on commission of the Diocese of Trier, after its completion re-consacrated on 14 September 2007 by Bishop Reinhard Marx. The pedestal in neo-Gothic style was designed by architect Christian Wilhelm Schmitt, night lumination is still funded by donations, a spiral staircase in the rectangular substructure leads to platform which was originally made as lookout for visitors, but due to an accident in 1905 no longer accessible. About twenty feet below the pillar is a bus stop and a car park.
