St. Augustine's church is hidden on Augustinerstrasse and is easy to miss as it blends in a little, with the surrounding buildings on the outside. Inside it has what has been the most detailed and colorful artwork of the churches I've seen in Mainz so far. Very beautiful to spend a few minutes in, faxing around. If your taking a stroll down Augustinerstase, then you shouldn't miss talking an opportunity to enjoy this church. Safe travels!
Many people go to the mainz cathedral due to all the hype in the square and stuff going on around the mainz cathedral. Although this is a true hidden gem. I don't speak German although I accidentally fell upon this church when traveling in Germany. A mass was going on and the organist playing was just as beautiful as the architecture. The ceiling is a whole work of art that will just make you want to interpret it for hours. The whole church is a must see if your into architecture. In my personal opinion it's nicer then the mainz cathedral because it's smaller, less crowded, lighter and has more artistic detail. The bad part is that there is nothing really to do on this side of town and there is no English mass. Anyway though if your in the area it is a must see
A baroque escapee from Bavaria it seems. Mighty facade towards the street but a colourful and playful interior.
Of all the church's in Mainz, this one has the best artwork. While the main church in the main square is bigger an older, St Augustine's is much more pretty with plenty to look at.
Like the small cityShopsRestaurants River side is great like it so muchYou can walk the hole citySecure and nice
It is easy to walk past this building, situated as it is in a row of shops and restaurants. The outer facade is non-descript, even boring, and gives no impression of the beauty behind the front doors. As soon as you leave the bustle of the street you find yourself in a place of peace and simple beauty. The stained glass windows are a very good example of this type of artwork.Well worth visiting.
Lovely church right on one of the main pedestrian steets in Mainz, worth a visit. We did around Easter and the church was beautifully decorated
Peaceful and ornate! Tucked away on Mainz's walking street, it really was an amazing building with stained glass windows, and sell the trappings of the church.
Old church with historic architecture in old town Mainz. Small streets and shops. Somewhat hidden if you don't recognize it as you walk down the street.
Don't miss this! it's a small church in the Altstadt (Old Town) -- you could almost walk right by it if you didn't know to look. It's an absolutely gorgeous example of Baroque! But know that there will be beggars at the entrance -- it's just the way it is (and has been for centuries!). But they won't bother you.
While heading towards Augustinerkeller restaurant, we walked past this small red standstone church. Peeping insdie, we found the Barouque interior rather beautiful, especially the ceiling fresco. It's a short walk from the Mainz cathedral. Worth a visit.
Tucked into a pedestrianized shopping area is this lovely Baroque church. While many baroque churches are filled with overblown and bombastic art, this one is a light-filled and charming expression of baroque taste. The ceiling paintings and the organ are lovely. While in the neighborhood, don't miss the set of four of five old half-timbered buildings that managed to survive the bombing during the war--they are about a three minute walk north of the church.
Its a very unsuspecting place to find. Located right on the small pedestrian street of Mainz, and unless you are looking up you can easily walk right past not knowing the spender that lays just beyond the door.
It would be very easy to walk straight past St Augustines Church, but do take the time to go in and have a look at the stunning interior. The ceiling paintings are simply beautiful. We visited a few days before Christmas and were enchanted by a small group of local school kids rehearsing their Christmas play.
You're likely to walk past this church, because of all the shopping on the other side of the street. But, it's beautiful to take a quick peek inside. The confessionals are particularly nice. When my daughter saw them (and we explained what they were) she said she'd kill a monkey just so she could go to confession in one of them. She's a weirdo.
