This is a castle ruin, not a working castle, so temper your expectations. There are better castles to visit, larger ruins, places with more elaborate infrastructure in terms of food and beverage options....but not many places with better views. In addition, the climb here is relatively modest if you pace yourself, you don't have to be a super athlete and you won't pay a small fortune for admission. Yes, you can ride to the top, but you will miss a lot of great views if you do so. The views from the top are well worth the effort of walking up. There mere fact that you are even considering a visit to Landshut probably means that you are not trying to see all of Europe in one week, and if you have taken a detour to the Mosel River region, then reward yourself and hike up to the top of this hill and watch the river traffic drift by, sit down and enjoy yourself and soak in a few thousand years of history. The Romans were here 2,000 years ago. Follow in their footsteps.
The restaurant is closedThere is just a kiosk serving beverages and small snacks. The view over the valley is epic. You can drive up but the walk up is lovely.I'm slow and I did it in 20 minutes. There is another nice restaurant with big terrace just below the castle Landshut
We took the shuttle bus from Bernkastel-Kues (from the Doktor-brunnen bus stop). This was a bus that had seen better days, and it was a little nervewrecking and not for the nervous heart to drive up those steep roads. The bus driver was very enthusiastic, and told a lot about the history and present of Bernkastel-Kues and the Burgruine (not while driving). And mainly because of him I recommend the shutlle bus. But I guess it also is a great walk.
We recently visited the castle ruins in Berkastel-Kues. It was a glorious day and to be honest we wanted to get away from the centre which was busy with (other) tourists and so decided to be a little bit more energetic. We enjoyed the climb which starts off in the winding narrow streets of Bernkastel, from the Town Hall, medieval market place up into the vineyards above the town. The view from the top is spectacular. There is a restaurant in the castle itself which we didn't use. The centre of the castle when we were there was a bit of building site because they had recently felled a tree and the branches hadn't been cleared. I have been to Bernkastel before but had never gone up to the castle - I was glad we did and can recommend the climb to visitors.
