Lake Scanno is almost perfect, it is small enough to walk/cycle around, it has level areas where you can swim in the albeit very cold water, there are bars with fantastic views, not too many people, the chance to walk in the beautiful mountains around, and the small but relatively busy town of Scanno only a shortish walk away. First thing in the morning when it is totally empty or later in the day when the sun sets behind the peaks it can be seen at its best.
We saw this lake last year in July and if course was better than now.In summer you can take a swim or just sunbath on the wonderful grass in front of the lake.It is quite visited during the weekends for picnics
Clean, beautiful, well serviced with a lovely bar where you can rent a sunbed, boat hire also is next to the bar, swimming and boating allowed, truly a lovely place to spend a day or 2.
I was walking through the area, very picturesque. Mostly locals, not a touristy place. There is a camping area around the lake and a park.
We had a warm June day relaxing by the lake. A nice breeze and a good book made the day, with salami, cheese and crackers.
We visited off-season on the 1st of May which is a holiday.Very busy at the entrance to the lake, but if you drove halfway around the crowds thinned out.Found a nice cafe and hired a paddle boat. This lake is a gem.
The lake is not necessarily worth the visit but the old city is spectacular. The trip to get to Scanno must be considered like part of the travel experience to enjoy the mountains and countryside.
We travelled here from Manoppello, so it took a little while. We were told that it was the most beautiful place, and while it was nice I was not blown away. It was nestled in amonst the mountains and we fortunately went there out of season, otherwise I think it would be very busy with Italians. There are boats and bikes to hire and a few photo opportunities. The most interesting thing was how they had espalied the trees around the lake at the bar! They were made into arches- facinating. If you decide to have a hot chocolate at the bar, you will find it to be more like a intense chocolate solid pudding rather than hot chocolate as english understand it. Have it as a pudding for a change. The drive was interesting to get here as the scenery is pretty as is most of the Abruzzo.
well I really tried! I spent hours waiting for the bus that the tourist office said would pick me up next to,the park, I flagged down a few buses passing but none was the one... I had a timetable but that didn't seem to help despite showing to many people. I was told by one bus driver I was in the wrong place so walked and waited again, finally walked another two km to be on the road heading to Scanno thinking I'd find a bus stop and finally get there but no none of the buses that passed were the one . Decided it wasn't going to be but I talked to a couple who had driven there and they said it was a must see.... So don't be put off, I wish you luck! The postcards looked lovely, apparently you can get off the bus at the lake then later catch the next one to the town.
After a drive on a very picturesque road (lots of curves) you arrive at the lake. It's like in the pictures, green all around, the mountains and the blue of the lake. There are some small "beaches" around, chairs and a kiosk, or a restaurant. In some of these they rent pedal boats or kayaks, no motors to disturb the silence. Not far from Sulmona (with a bautiful old village), and Pescara.
his is one of those hidden gems in Italy. Only 2 hours east of Rome. The road into Scanno is spectacular, going through some very deep gorges. The lake is not large, but there is very little development. Great place for families. One of the best things is that there are hardly any foreign tourists, which means that you have a very genuine Italian experience where nothing is rushed, the people are relaxed and the food and drink prices are excellent value.
The lake becomes more awesome when you learn the history.
Ci ritornerei molto volentieri.
