a lot of stairs but at the top there is a great view! the ticket was not too expensive an it takes not too much time.
An excellent start to our visit to Orvieto. The tower gives a view of the whole town and the surrounding countryside. It allows one to build up an image of the whole town and how the various areas relate to one another. We cheated and used the lift but the subsequent stairs to the top were a reasonable climb.
OK, so how many 13th century towers give you THIS sort of view. Answer: not many. Best view of Orvieto, and clearly at "mountaintop" experience. Can't leave Orvieto without visiting, climbing up (a schlepp, but worth it) at least once.
I asked myself if I could make the climb, as my 9 year old granddaughter bounded ahead. But make it I did and wow! The view was worth every step. In each direction there was a new vista, taking in Orvieto and the surrounding landscape. Don't forget the camera. This is a photography dream.
Only 3 euro.... wasn't too busy when we got there. Take the elevator, then an easy climb for the rest of the way. Spectacular views, but watch the bell ringing every 15 minutes - quite loud as you are right next to it!
This is a great experience to see the hillsides surrounding Orvieto. There is a lift and then 230 steps to climb, but it is well worth it. If you purchase the Carta Unica at the train station, then this is one of the attractions which is included in the cost. The views from the top of the clock tower are magnificent and we were fortunate to have a beautiful October sunny afternoon. The clock does chime on the hour and has a magical sound throughout the town. If you can manage the climb, this is well worth your time! You will have a bird's eye view of the town's beautiful setting.
Very close to the Duomo, we decided to climb up the stairs because not much else was open in Orvieto over lunchtime. For a fee of 3 Euro you can climb up to the top of the clock tower for memorable views. At 45 metres high, the tower was built in the late 13th century to monitor the surrounding territory. It became a clock tower when the mechanical clock was installed in the 1800s. There are 230+ steps but you can cut out around 100 of them by getting the lift up to the second level. From there the climb is one of the easiest tower climbs I've done because the steps are new, wooden, even and wide. There is no narrow, slanting tower to negotiate on the way to the top. Although it was a rainy day when we were there, the view was still worthy of the climb. You only need 30 minutes to do this unless you want to linger for ages at the top to savour the view which is understandable.
The clock tower Torre del Morro is in the middle of the city at the intersection of Via del Duomo, Via Della Consttuente and Corso Cavour. The climb to the top is less taxing than Siena's tower and affords 360' views of the Umbrian countryside and the intriqing streets of Orvieto.
The guy who EVENTUALLY opened up to let us see the tower looked like he'd been 'out on the tiles' and he was LATE in doing so! As there are several entrances to this sight, the fact that all of them were locked till 1/4hr after opening time did not fill one with confidence, and led to considerable exploration in vain of adjacent properties! However, the view, (after a considerable climb - the lift only goes a short way up!) is worth it and gives another attractive experience of Orvieto.
It's a long hot climb to the top but do this day 1 to get a good lay of the land to see the excellent views. We loved it!
take the elevator to the 2nd floor and climb the remaining 170 steps to treat yourselves to a magnificent view of Orvieto and its surroundings
It's quite a long way up, but it's worth every step. Once upstairs one will have a spectacular view on Orvieto and it's surroundings!
We tend to climb every tower in the towns we visit so we had to climb this one. It's easiest enough to climb and narrow to navigate but definitely safe.
A mammoth climb of 250 stairs took us to the top of the Torre del Moro, you can take an elevator some of the way up, but where is the challenge in that. It was a long, hard climb but we eventually made it and the view was definitely worth it.
