At the tail end of the holiday season, there are still a few stands with crafts, scarves, foods etc. in the piazza. There is also an ice skating rink this year! We came here with our two kids to ride on the mini-train and then have an aperitivo during the "Bevi Oltrepo'" event. We had a fun little tour of the city and while just being on the mini train nearly blew my son's mind, I really got a kick out of riding through the old city streets and seeing it from a tourist perspective.Just around the corner there is the main city cathedral too, and I was surprised to find out that it has the third largest dome in Italy! Finally, have to say that the bar Lux at the southwest corner of the piazza has great coffee and really friendly staff, and the Irish style pub Broletto nearby is great for sitting outside under the arches for lunch or aperitivo.
The center of Pavia is characterized from the old buildings and the streets made of stones from the river Ticino. In piazza della Vittoria you can find many caffe/bars, pizzerias and the famous gelateria Pampanin that is one from the oldest ice-cream shops and has the most delicious ice cream (try spaghetti or pizza ice-cream and you ll be surprised!). If you want to see the nightlife of Pavia you have to go to Piazza on Wednesday night (wich is university student's night) , Friday night and then the weekend ! All coffees and alcoholic beverages are cheap there. If you visit Piazza della Vittoria at the afternoon you should definitely try the "Aperitivo" there (just choose a bar and sit and ask for it) , it is an Italian habit : a snack (some pizza, potato chips, olives ecc) before dinner and of course drinks included. But if you visit the square at the evening I recommend the Pizzeria " Marechiaro" where you should try at least one time the real Italian pizza, or the risotto! if you prefer the pasta then try the real Italian Carbonara recipe! And the night if you decide to go to a bar and you re a wine lover I recommend you to drink these sweet sparkling wines : "Moscato d' Asti" or "Sangue di Giuda". If you prefer something more bitter-sweet try the "Aperol Spritz" . Piazza della vittoria is the meeting point of all people who live there, the atmosphere there is very pleasant and romantic. In other words... just visit it!
I loved this piazza immediately. The old buildings around it as well as the multiples cafés and restaurants make it a vibrant yet calming place where you can relax and watch the world go by.
This is one of my heart catching places. I simply love the view over the old buildings around, especially in the summer evening. There are a few nice bars, caffes and restaurants where you can sit to watch the picturesque views. Depending on each of the places the atmosphere can be romandtic, lively, or official simply choose what you need, take a sit and breathe the atmosphere of the place.
When visiting Pavia, You can't miss Piazza Vittoria, which serves as the center of the city and the start point for visiting most of the other main attractions of the city, which are located at a short walking distance. In the Piazza you won't find commercial stores, fashion boutiques or other retailers like H&M or Zara who usually invade city centers. All you have are coffee houses, bars, restaurants and ice cream places, which gives the Piazza a wonderful, vivid atmosphere. The Piazza is a pedestrian area, so you can enjoy this various places peacefully. Piazza Vittoria dates back to 1365, the year in which it was inaugurated, and the medieval buildings surrounding it are well preserved, making it a nice place visit, even if you do not wish to stop over there for a break.
The piazza is the centre of the city and it is a major reference point. The cathedral is in the adjoining piazza. Corso Cavour runs through the piazza and it is one of the primary streets, along with Strada Nuova, in the city. There are quite a few bars and a couple of pizzarias here. The buildings are medieval and beautiful. Enjoy watching the retired men, who pass their golden years sitting and chatting, watch you.
Good food at a fair price with friendly staff in a lovely square with local music on hand
All those old buildings create a magic atmosphere in the late evening street lights. There are many restaurants around, so you can pick the right one for you. They all serve Italian food and wines.
I turisti x ammirare i palazzi.
